Socio-economic Condition of Fishermen of the Chalan Beel Under Tarash Thana of Sirajganj District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study on Socio-economic Condition of Fishermen of the Chalan Beel under Tarash Thana of Sirajganj District in Bangladesh represents the actual fishers’ community of Bangladesh from September 2010 to August 2011. From the study it was found that 20-30 age groups were the major manpower of the community. Families consisting of 4-6 members were majority and they were 64% of the sample respondents. Most of the respondents of the study area were illiterate (54%), they can sign only. Out of the total number of children 51% were boys and 49% were girls, 56% fishermen were involved in fishing profession from the period of their father and 72% fishermen sell their labour in agricultural sector in off-fishing period. The study revealed that 50% fishermen earned Tk. 200-250 per day; 20% earned Tk. 150-200 per day; and 12%, 10%, 6% and 2% fishermen earned Tk. 100-150, Tk. 250-300, Tk. 300-350 and Tk. 350-400 per day respectively during the full harvesting period. Only 2% fishers’ lived in brick-wall and tin roofed house. 64% fishermen have no radio or television but 80% fishermen use mobile phone. It was also observed that 87% loanees took loan from NGOs, 50% of loanees borrowed money to buy their fishing equipments and 66% fishermen were involved with Samittee/Association. The survey disclosed that 64% families use semi-pacca latrine surrounded by nylon bag and 16% families use open latrine. 84% fishermen visit the doctors for their treatment. Most of the fishermen do not know the fishing law, although the law mostly made for the fishermen.

Objectives:

1. To examine the socio-economic condition of the fishermen living in Chalan Beel area during September 2010 to August 2011, 2. To find out the factors affecting the socio-economic condition, and 3. To suggest for implement of socio-economic condition of the fishermen of Chalan Beel.

Methodology:

The study was carried on during the period of September 2010 to August 2011. Both primary and secondary data have been used for the study. Primary data were collected from the fishermen, fish trader like beparies, aratdars, whole-sellers, retailers and associates through interview, questionnaire, discussion and observation. To carry out the study fishermen were selected by random sampling basis from all the villages of Tarash Thana, Sirajganj. A total of 100 fishermen were interviewed. Data were mainly related to age structure, family size, ownership of land and house, housing structure, income-expenditure, standard of living, occupation, earner’s dependents, prices of fishes, credit supply, use of preservative, fishing training, Fishing Act 1995, health and sanitation, food and nutrition, use of electricity and mobile phone, sources of drinking and bathing water, mode of health treatment, education and economic condition etc. Collected data were analyzed to explain the socio-economic and demographic condition of fishermen of Chalan Beel. Secondary data were collected from different journals, published reports, documents etc.
