The present study was conducted in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts under greater rangpur region during 2007 with the aim of mitigating monga through cultivating early maturing BRRI dhan33. Monga is used to describe the famine like situation at northern part of Bangladesh in which the poor suffered acute deprivation. BRRI dhan33 is an early maturing short duration rice variety which has potentiality to mitigate monga by generating employment opportunities during peak monga period. Findings indicate that one hundred fifty farmers cultivated the variety in about 40.50 hectares of land. The present study assessed the responses of the farmers towards BRRI dhan33 cultivation. Seventy eight respondents were selected using simple random sampling technique. Nine selected characteristics of the sample farmers were subjected to correlation analysis for searching relationship with the proposed areas to be brought under BRRI dhan33 in the following amon season. Study findings showed that 82.04% of the farmers expressed their intention to continue cultivation of the variety in the following amon season, while 17.95% of them expressed that they will not cultivate the variety in the subsequent amon season. Out of the 9 independent variables, education, farm size, number of labour days used, yield of BRRI dhan33, market price and profit earned from cultivating the variety exhibited significant positive relationship. Area under BRRI dhan33 showed negative significant relationship. Age and family size did not show significant relationship. The studies showed that cultivation of BRRI dhan33 have high potentiality to mitigate monga through generating employment during peak monga period.

1. To describe the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents, 2. To determine farmers’ responses to BRRI dhan33 through assessing the areas proposed for BRRI dhan33 cultivation in the following amon season, 3. To explore the relationship between the response of farmers’ towards BRRI dhan33 and their selected characteristics, and 4. To find out the problems of BRRI dhan33 cultivation as perceived by the farmers.

Data were collected during January to March, 2007 after harvesting BRRI dhan33 and the following rabi crops. For collecting data, an interview schedule was prepared according to the objectives of the study. The study information was collected from a group of sample respondents of 4 locations i.e. Nilphamari (Sadar Upazila), Rangpur (Gangachara Upazila), Lalmonirhat (Hatibandha Upazila) and Kurigram (Ulipur Upazila). All the farmers (150 farmers) of the selected four Upazilas who have cultivated BRRI dhan33 constituted the population of the present study. Among the 150 farmers, seventy eight (78) farmers were selected as sample following simple random sampling technique. Separate focus group discussions with the sample farmers were arranged in each study location. These focus group discussions were organized to identify the common opinion of the respondents regarding performances of BRRI dhan33 comparing to popular amon varieties (such as BR11) and potentialities of BRRI dhan33 in overcoming monga situation. After collecting requisite data; they were processed and analyzed with a view to achieve the objectives of the study. SPSS 12.0 was used in data analyses. Statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, mainly mean and percentages, parametric statistics such as t-statistics for comparing the mean values of various study parameters, were employed for data analyses and explanation. Beside quantitative analyses, qualitative analyses of information were also performed.
