The comparative efficacy of organophosphorus insecticides viz., Dimecron, Ekalux, Fyfanon, Roxion and Diazinon on the aphid mortality, growth parameters and yield of mustard were studied in the field and net house at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the winter season of 1991-1992, against mustard aphid, Lipahis erysimi (kalten bach). The crop was sprayed twice at 60 and 75 days after sowing @ 0.075% active ingredient. It was found that Ekalux followed by Dimecron were graded to be superior in controlling mustard aphid. Regarding the growth parameters viz., plant height, number of branches, number of pods, seeds per pod, viable seeds per pod, dry matter weight and yield increased over untreated control. Whereas nonviable seeds per pod showed insignificant effect due to insecticidal treatment. Ekalux followed by Dimecron was found to be relatively more effective than all the other insecticides in increasing dry matter weight and seed yield.

1. The present study was under taken to determine the comparative efficacy of oranophosphorus insecticides on the aphid mortality, growth parameters and yield of mustard.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) farm from November 1991 to February 1992. A high yielding variety of mustard commonly known as ″Safal’’ was carried as a test crop. The experiment was conducted simultaneously in net house of the Department of Agricultural chemistry, BAU, Mymensingh. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with four replication per treatments. In the net house the pot were filled with the soil collected from the respective field of the experimental site. Experimental plot and pots in net house were fertilized with Urea. Triple super phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of potash (MP) @ 260, 200 and 66 kg/ha respectively. TSP and MP were applied at the time of final land preparation, while urea was applied in three splits. Half of the dose of urea was applied during final land preparation, Just before sowing and half of the remaining amount, at the time of vegetative growth and rest half at the time of flowering. Mustard seeds of variety “Safal” were sown continuously in rows @ 7 kg/ha. in plot size of 4m x 3m with row spacing of 25 cm. on 7th November in both field and net house. Normal cultural practices were followed. In the field experiment plants were allowed for natural aphid infestation. Twenty plants were randomly selected from each plot each plant was tagged. The number of infested and uninfected plants in those plants were counted at 45 days (pre treatment), 5th day after first spray and at the 10th day after second spraying. Thus the percentage of infested plants by aphid was calculated. But in net house the plants were infested artificially by aphid. One plant from each pot was artificially infested with 20 aphids and it was covered by the nylon nets. Artificial infestation was done on January 08, 1992. After 5th days of artificial infestation insecticides were sprayed as it was done in the field study. Number of aphid was counted with the help of a magnifying glass, five days after first spraying. Second spray was done after 15 days of first spraying and number of aphids was counted again after 10 days of second spraying. Five foliar insecticides namely, Dimecron 100 EC, Ekalux 25 EC, Fyfanon 57 EC, Roxion 40 EC and Diazinon 60 EC @ 0.075% active ingredient were sprayed for aphid control at 60 and 75 days after mustard sowing both in field and net house crop. In field experiment 20 plants from each plot were randomly collected at maturity stage for collecting various agronomic data such as plant height (cm), number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, number of viable seeds per pod and dry matter weight. Plot yield was converted into per hectare yield. But in net house, 2 plants in each pot were randomly selected and tagged for collecting various agronomic data. Seed yield and dry matter yields were expressed in g/plant. The statistical analysis of the data generated out from the experiment were computed.
