Factors Associated with the Extent of Vegetable Production Activities in Homestead Area by the Women Members: Under World Vision Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Tumulia Union of Kaligong Upazila under Gazipur district. Five villages were purposively selected out of nine from the World Vision Project area and 48 women-members were chosen through stratified random sampling method. The findings revealed that the average level of income from the vegetable production of the three categories: landless with homestead, marginal, and small farm size women-members were 6.81%, 5.09% and 6.88% respectively of their total annual income. The variables like farm size and annual family income of the women-members had low association with the extent of vegetable production. Anyway, income from vegetable production, farm input facilities received by the study group and supervision on vegetable production activities by the field staff of World Vision Project had very strong association with extent of vegetable production program. However, full achievement of the target program could not be made due to inadequate irrigation facilities, economic hardship, low market price of vegetable and poor road communication and transportation facilities. These problems were probably some of the reasons for not favorable attitude among the women-members for the expansion of vegetable cultivation.

Objectives:

1. To discuss the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the women members, 2. To determine the percentage of income earned from vegetables production in homestead area by the different categories of the women members, 3. To asses the relationship between the extent of vegetables production activities in the homestead area and the selected characteristics of the women members, and 4. To identify the problems encountered by the women members in vegetables production activities.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in five purposively selected villages namely Arabandakhola, Bandakhola, Boali, Charakhola and Parartek of Tumulia Union in Kaligong Upazila under Gazipur district. Updated lists of all the vegetables growers of the selected villages were collected with help of Coordinator and Agricultural Program Organizer (APO) of World Vision Project. The total numbers women vegetables growers were 320. Among them 48 were chosen through stratified random sampling technique which constituted 30% of the total women vegetables growers. The empirical data were collected personally by using a structured interview schedule and analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software.
