Seed Quality of BARImung-5 Due to Application of Sulphur and Boron

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the field Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy, HSTU, Dinajpur from April to July 2006, and the Laboratory experiments from November 2006 to March 2007 to investigate the effect of sulphur and boron on the quality of mungbean variety BARIMUNG- 5. Four sulphur levels (viz. 0,15, 30, 45 kg ha-1) and three boron levels (viz. 0, 5, 10 kg ha^-1) were included as the treatment. Results of the experiment revealed that different levels of sulphur and boron had significant effect on different seed qualitative characteristics viz. moisture, germination (%) and vigour index. Among the different doses of sulphur 30 kg and boron 5 kg ha^-1 was the best in respect of all the seed quality characteristics (except % moisture content).

Objectives:

1. To examine the effect of sulphur and on the viability and vigour of mungbean seed.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur to evaluate the effect of fertilizer elements sulphur and boron on the seed quality of mungbean variety BARImung-5. The experimental field was a piece of welldrained medium high land. The soil type was sandy loam in texture; having low organic matter, moderately slow permeability and deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and boron in comparison with the standard nutrition status. The soil was acidic in nature with pH 5.6. Gypsum was used for sulphur fertilization and boric acid was used for boron fertilization in the study. The sulphur treatments were four viz. 0, 15, 30 and 45 kg ha^-1 and the boron treatments were three viz. 0, 5 and 10 kg ha^-1. The number of replications was 3 and plot size was 4m x 2.5m; and the design of the experiment was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The properly collected seeds were dried to moisture content 9%. The crop was harvested by hand on 21 June, 01 July and 14 July 2006 at full maturity (when about 95% pods became brown in colour). Then each plot seeds are divided into 5 samples and stored at 0.5 mm thickness polypropylene bags for different test during 5 months. The storage was done in August month. The seed quality test was randomly done in November 2006 to March 2007. The data collected on different parameters under the experiment were statistically analyzed to obtain the level of significance using MSTAT-C Computer Programme. The treatment means were compared by Duncan`s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
