Some botanicals viz. neem, tobacco, biskatali, dholkalmi, garlic and chilli extract, neembicidin and an insecticide namely Asataf 75SP were used against the incidence of chewing and sucking pests of cotton at three different locations (Dinajpur, Jessore and Gazipur) of Bangladesh. The efficacy of the botanicals was compared with the formulated chemical insecticide Asataf 75SP. This study revealed that higher doses and increased number of spray of botanicals are potent enough to suppress the pest populations and neem solution possessed higher potency comparing other botanicals. Neembicidine provided reasonably higher yield in all locations and indicated that the formulated botanicals hold a promise for easy alternative of effective protection measure.

1. To explore the utilization of commonly available plant products in an around cotton ecosystem against few chewing and sucking pests.

Raising of crop - The experiment was conducted during August to December 2007 and 2008 in three regional cotton research, training and seed multiplication farms at Dinajpur, Jessore and Gazipur. The stations are located in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh. The soil was sandy loam with pH 4.5 to 5.5. Previous crop of the three experimental locations was sunheamp as a green manure. Irrigation and drainage facilities were readily available in the farm. The Land was prepared at field condition by deep ploughing and harrowing followed by laddering. The field layout was done after final land preparation. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design using the cotton variety CB-10. The plot size was 10× 10 m. The spacing between block-to-block and plot-to-plot were 1.5 and 1m and respective footpath was 2 m. Seeds were sown on 3rd August 2007 and 5th August 2008, at the rate of 15 kg /ha in a north-south row. They were sown by hand, keeping a distance of 45 cm from plant to plant and row-to-row distance was 90 cm. Necessary intercultural operations such as mulching, weeding, irrigation and application of fertilizer were done properly as and when necessary. Treatments and spray application - Botanicals such as neem, tobacco, biskatali, dholkalmi extract, garlic and chili smash, neembicidine and a chemical insecticide Asataf 75SP were used for this experiment. Neem, biskatali, dholkalmi, tobacco leaves, garlic and chili were smashed by using electric grinder and then passed through a 20 mesh sieve before dissolving in water. Then the extracts were dissolved in water to make different doses and kept for 8 hours prior to spray. Spraying was done by a knapsack sprayer. To estimate the incidence of pests, sampling was carried out from the cotton field in the entire cotton growing season (August to Botanicals such as neem, tobacco, biskatali, dholkalmi extract, garlic and chili smash, neembicidine and a chemical insecticide Asataf 75SP were used for this experiment. Then the extracts were dissolved in water to make different doses and kept for 8 hours prior to spray. Spraying was done by a knapsack sprayer. To estimate the incidence of pests, sampling was carried out from the cotton field in the entire cotton growing season (August to November). It was done by weekly scouting taking 5 plants randomly from each replication. Plants were examined for jassid, aphid and american bollworm. The presence of aphid was estimated on a scale 0 - 4 (‘0’ no aphid, ‘1’ few aphids, ‘2’ one leaf or growing point infested, ‘3’ more than one leaf or growing point infested, ‘4’ entire plant heavily infested). Newly growing parts with two fully expanded leaves were examined for sucking pests. A scouting form was used during estimation of the pests. Data analysis - Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and the mean values were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT)
