A field experiment was conducted to quantify amount of water needed for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation; to determine WUE by practicing AWD for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation;and to determine the productivity and profitability of AWD for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation. The experiment was conducted in Aman season with the following treatments:T1 = Supplemental irrigation applied when water level is 15 cm below the soil surface; T2= Supplemental irrigation applied when water level is 20 cm below the soil surface; and T3= Rainfed condition. In high land, ET requirement varied from 655 mm to 699 mm. The highest water requirement was 699 mm in treatment T1 which followed by treatment T2. Three supplemental irrigation were applied in high land rice field. The highest water apply was 997 mm in treatment T1 followed by treatment T2. Third irrigation was not effective due rainfall occur day after irrigation. In medium land, ET and S&P losses followed the similar trained with same water management. Total water requirement varied from 325 mm to 355 mm. It was observed that in the high land water productivity was highest in treatment T3 for all the varieties because the amount of rainfall satisfied the crop water requirement during the whole growing season. On the other hand, in the medium land water productivity was also highest in treatment T3 for all the varieties.  The water use efficiency (WUE) was highest in treatment T3 for both high and medium land (70 and 76%) as the distribution of rainfall was uniform and it satisfied the crop water requirement. In terms of yield, the highest yield was obtained from BRRI dhan38 with the treatment T1 for both high and medium land condition.

  1. To quantify amount of water needed for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation.
  2. To determine WUE by practicing AWD for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation.
  3. To determine the productivity and profitability of AWD for MV and local aromatic rice cultivation.

The field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur, during 2009-10 in medium and high land. The treatments comprised four aromatic rice varieties in split plot design with water treatment in main plot and rice varieties in sub plot replicated three times. The experiment was conducted in Aman season with the following treatments:T1 = Supplemental irrigation applied when water level is 15 cm below the soil surface; T2= Supplemental irrigation applied when water level is 20 cm below the soil surface; and T3= Rainfed condition. BRRI Recommended fertilizer doses were applied. Plot size was 4 m × 5 m. The four aromatic rice varieties were BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38 and local aromatic variety Kalizira. Seeds of all varieties were sown on 16 July. In high land all varieties were transplanted on 17 August and harvested on 7 November, 2009. Similarly in medium land, all varieties were transplanted on 22 August and harvested on 30 November, 2009.

In high land, ET requirement was not varied but S&P requirement varied by different water management (398-442 mm). Total water requirement varied from 655 mm to 699 mm. The highest water requirement was 699 mm in treatment T1 which followed by treatment T2. Three supplemental irrigation were applied in high land rice field. Total water applied (including rainfall) varied from 767 mm to 703 mm in different water treatments. The highest water apply was 997 mm in treatment T1 followed by treatment T2. Third irrigation was not effective due rainfall occur day after irrigation. In medium land, ET and S&P losses followed the similar trained with same water management. Total water requirement varied from 325 mm to 355 mm. The highest water requirement was 594 mm in T1 which followed by T2. One supplemental irrigation was applied in treatments T1 and T2. Total applied water (including rainfall) varied from 703 to 783 mm in different water treatments. The highest applied water was 783 mm in treatment T1 followed by T2 . it was observed that in the high land water productivity was highest in treatment T3 for all the varieties because the amount of rainfall satisfied the crop water requirement during the whole growing season. On the other hand, in the medium land water productivity was also highest in treatment T3 for all the varieties.  Yield was highest in treatment T1 for all varieties in both high and medium lands which are not significant. The water use efficiency (WUE) was highest in treatment T3 for both high and medium land (70 and 76%) as the distribution of rainfall was uniform and it satisfied the crop water requirement. In high land, the highest number of effective tiller/m2 (296) was obtained from BRRI dhan38 with the treatment T1 which was followed by the treatment T2. The lowest number of effective tiller/m2 (213) in treatment T3 was obtained from local aromatic variety Kalizira followed by treatment T2. In medium land, the highest number of effective tiller/m2 (312) was obtained from BRRI dhan38 in treatment T1 followed by treatment T2. Also in terms of yield, the highest yield was obtained from BRRI dhan38 with the treatment T1 for both high and medium land condition.
