Economic Performance of Different Power Threshers for Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Threshing is considered to be an important operation in rice production. Use of appropriate power thresher may result in reduced post-harvest loss of paddy. Five different power threshers including one hold on and four throw-in types were tested for their comparative performances and economics during T. Aman, 1999. BRRI Open-drum, BRRI H-8./TH-7 CCK, BARI power threshers and manual threshing were 459, 936, 1066, 1233, 1183 and 1536 Tk/ha, respectively. The equivalent threshing times were 11.10, 1957, 20.06, 25.67, 34.09 and 68.29 hr/ha, respectively. About 70% cost was saved using Open-drum thresher compared to TH-8 Th-7, CCK, and BARI thresher. The break-even levels of BRRI open-drum, Th-8, TH-7, CCK and BARI thresher were 1.5, 5.0, 2.75, 7.0 and 3.0 ha, respectively. Break-even analysis showed that the BRRI Open –drum thresher was the most appropriate one for farmers having even 1.5 ha of land.

Objectives:

To determine the economic feasibility of threshing rice by different power driven thresher with manual threshing.
To identify the recommend the most efficient threshers for the farmers.

Methodology:

Experimental design and treatments : Five threshers such as BRRI axial flow, throw-in type Th-7 power thresher, BRRI axial flow, throw-in type TH-8 power thresher; BRRI Open-drum hold-on type power thresher; Comilla cooperative karkhana,s (CCKs) power thresher; BARI power thresher were tested against three straw length such as 70, 95 and 110 cm. The experiment was conducted using a factorial completely randomized design with three replications.Rice verity used was BRRIdhan.30. The experiment was conducted at BRRI, Gazipur during T. Aman season. 1999. Measurements and analysis: According to the test code of the Regional Network for Agricultural Machinery (RNAM. 1995), the following data were collected for every test run under this study.Labor requirement:Two unskilled laborers operated the BRRI TH-7, BRRI TH-8 CCK and BARI power threshers where as the BRRI Open-drum thresher was operated by three unskilled labourers. Economic analysis was done considering these labor uses. Operating time of each of the tests was determined using a stopwatch.

Labor and power requirement : Labor and power requirements of difference power threshers at different straw lengths are shown. The Open-drum thresher required the lowest amount of labour (6.41-9.77 man-h/ton) and power (7.9-12.0 kW-h/ton) than then the others at all straw lengths. The BARI thresher required the highest amount of labor, 10.22-28.62 man-h/ton for different straw lengths. The power requirement was the highest for TH-8 thresher. As in the case of labor consumption, the BRRI Open-drum thresher required the least amount of power around 10 kW-h/t for all straw lengths. Thus, the Open drum thresher appeared to be the best for threshing paddy. Economic performance of different threshers: Total costs of different power and manual threshing devices are shown. The total cost of threshing by open –drum, TH-8, TH-7, CCK, BARI and manual threshing of rice were about 459, 936, 1066, 1233, 1183 and 1536 Tk/hr. The corresponding threshing times were 11.10, 19.57, 26.06, 25.67, 34.09 and 68.29 hr/ha. It is therefore, evident that the BRRI Open-drum thresher is the cheapest threshing device.
