Yield Response of Potato to Npks Fertilizers in Old Bahmaputra Floodplain Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Multilocation Testing Site (MLT) Kishoregonj sadar in an irrigated medium high land under Old Brahmaputra Floodplain AZE 9 during Rabi seasons of 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. The objectives were to evaluate the response of potato to NPKS fertilizers and to find out the optimum dose of nutrients for maximum tuber yield of potato. Fourteen treatments were tested formulating from 4 levels each of N, P, K, and S. Significantly higher yield of tuber was obtained from T3 (N_I20, P₃₀, K₉₀ and S₂₀ kg/ha). Regression analysis showed that optimum rate of N, P, K and S was 121,33,104 and 18 kg/ha, respectively for the maximum tuber yield. The optimum economic dose of N, P, K and S were appeared as 120,30, 90 and 20 kg/ha, respectively. Considering yield, economics, regression analysis and nutrient status of soil at the rate of N₁₂₀, P₃₀, K₉₀ and S₂₀ kg/ha was found suitable for potato production under AEZ 9.

Objectives:

To find out optimum levels of N, P, K and S for obtaining the maximum tuber yield of potato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Kishoregonj sadar MLT site during the Rabi seasons of 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 to find out the optimum fertilizer dose for maximum tuber yield of potato under irrigated medium high land of AEZ 9 (Old Brahmaputra Floodplain). The soil of the experimental plots was loamy to clayey in texture. The soil was apparently neutral (pH 6.76) in reaction. The initial fertility status of the experimental plots showed that organic matter content (0.9 %), total nitrogen content was 0.11%, available P 8.52μg/g, exchangeable K 0.14 meq/100g and available S 9.56μg/g. All the nutrients status of the soil was low. The average maximum temperature was 25.09, 25.00 and 25.77ºC; minimum temperature was 19.22, 19.18 and 19.57ºC and total rainfall were 39, 55 and 08 mm of three consecutive years during the period of study. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with six dispersed replications. Unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. Four different levels of NPK and S were tested. The levels of fertilizer N were 0, 60, 120 & 180 kg/ha that of PO, 15,30 & 45 kg/ha, K 0, 45, 90 & 135 kg/ha and S 0, 10, 20 & 30 kg/ha. The fertilizers were used as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. The doses indicate control, MYG, HYG and HYG x 1.3 times high. Boric acid @ 6 kg/ha as a source of boron was applied as blanket dose. All P, S, and B half of N & K were applied as basal during final land preparation. The rest of N & K were applied as side dressing after 45 days of planting. Potato (var. Diamont) seed tuber was sown at 60 cm x 15 em spacing at the rate of 1500 kg/ha having standard size. Every year potato seed was sown in the last week of November and harvested in the 2nd week of March. Intercultural operations such as irrigation, weeding, earthing up and pest control were done properly. Statistical analysis was performed and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was done to compare the mean values.

Achievement/Findings:

Although MBCR of treatment T3 was lower than that of T12, its gross return as well as gross margin was higher compared to Tl2. The yield of T3 was also higher than that of T 12. The optimum rates of nutrients for the maximum yield as obtained from regression analysis corroborate the treatment T3. Thus, application of N, P, K and S at the rate of 120, 30, 90 and 20 kg/ha, respectively was found suitable for potato tuber yield under the AEZ 9.
