Participatory Varietal Selection of Modern T. Aman Rice Varieties in Salt Affected Coastal Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A set of rice varieties was evaluated during two consecutive T. Aman season in Kaliganj, Satkhira, situated in highly salt affected area. This area is occupied by huge number of gher where shrimp farming is very popular. Modern rice varieties were evaluated in this gher area to increase the agriculture and aquaculture production. Participatory varietal selection (PVS) seems to be a preferred approach to select varieties suitable for stress prone areas, where farmer’s participation are directly involved to choice variety(s) as they desire. Two and three sets of experiment were conducted with ten varieties in 1^st and 2^nd season, respectively. BRRI dhan52 (111 cm) showed the highest plant height in 1^st season and in 2^nd season the highest plant height was also observed in BRRI dhan52 (94.0 cm) followed by BRRI dhan47 (93.0 cm). Plant height is important in shrimp gher because of water stagnation. BRRI dhan44 (4.23 t/ha) produced the highest yield followed by BRRI dhan52 (3.72 t/ha) & BRRI dhan47 (3.70 t/ha) in 1^st season. On the other hand in 2^nd season BRRI dhan52 (4.0 t/ha) produced the highest yield followed by BRRI dhan47 (3.4 t/ha). Based on farmers’ preference, BRRI dhan52 and BRRI dhan47 were selected as the best varieties by both male and female farmers. Strong significant correlation was observed on the preference scores between farmers and breeders. Considering most of the parameters and PVS result the salt tolerant variety BRRI dhan47 and the submergence tolerant variety BRRI dhan52 were found suitable. It is need to be developed rice varieties tolerance to salinity in combination with submergence that will be adaptable for this area.

Objectives:

To validate and conduct PVS using newly developed rice varieties suitable for high saline and submergence-prone areas.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in two consecutive Transplanted Aman season (2011 and 2012) at Sehera, Kaliganj, Satkhira. In 1^st season two sets and in 2^nd season three sets of experiment were conducted in different seeding dates following randomized complete block design (RCB) with three replications using ten varieties. In 1^st season, seeding was done in two different dates (15 July and 30 July) and thirty-five days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. In 2^nd season, seeding was done in three different dates (01 July, 16 July and 31 July). Transplanting was done on 3 September 2012 (1^st and 2^nd set together due to heavy rain fall and high water depth) and 3^rd set on 16 September 2012. Sixty four, 49 and 47 days old seedlings of 1^st, 2^nd and 3rd sets were transplanted, respectively using 2-3 seedlings per hill. The line to line and plant to plant spacing was 20 cm and 15 cm, respectively. During final land preparation, TSP-MOP-Gypsum- ZnSO₄ @ 53-83-61-10 kg/ha were applied. Urea was applied @ 152 kg per hectare in three installments at 7-10 days after transplanting, active tillering stage and 5-7 days before panicle initiation. Intercultural operations and pest management were performed as and when necessary. Ten T. Aman genotypes suitable for saline prone areas were evaluated by active participation of farmers in Mother trial under participatory varietal selection (PVS) as described by Islam et al., 2008b. The Mother trials (MT) were conducted with the direct supervision of Plant Breeders. PVS were conducted following the procedure described by Paris et al. 2011.

Achievement/Findings:

Two varieties viz. BRRI dhan47 and BRRI dhan52 were performed better than other varieties considering all the characters. Farmers and breeders also preferred these two varieties. Rice varieties with tolerant to both salinity and submergence will be suitable for this area.
