The experiment was carried out during two consecutive Transplanted Aman season (2011 and 2012) at Bazarkhali, Amtali, Barguna situated in low salt affected area in Southern Bangladesh. Mostly traditional rice varieties were cultivated during the T. Aman season in this area. Three sets of experiments were conducted in different sowing dates using twelve varieties including one local check in both the seasons with three replications. In first season, the highest yield was obtained from BRRI dhan51 (4.3 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan54 (3.7 t/ha); BRRI dhan44 (4.8 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan52 (4.5 t/ha) and BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan39 (3.5 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan52 and BRRI dhan54 (3.4 t/ha) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd sets, respectively. On the other hand, the highest yield was observed in BRRI dhan52 (5.6 t/ha) followed by BR11-Saltol and BRRI dhan41 (5.5 t/ha); BR11-Saltol (5.8 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan54 (5.6 t/ha) and BRRI dhan53 (4.0 t/ha) followed by BRRI dhan54 (4.0 t/ha) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd sets, respectively in the following season. In case of date of sowing, the highest yield was observed on 15 July (2nd set) seeding ranged from 2.42 to 4.76 t/ha and 4.2 to 5.8 t/ha among the tested varieties in 1st and 2nd season, respectively. The second highest yield was obtained on 24 June (1st set) seeding ranged from 1.54 to 4.30 t/ha and 3.5 to 5.6 t/ha in 1st and 2nd season, respectively. But the late sowing 3rd set (mid August) demonstrated lower yield ranged from 1.80 to 3.47 t/ha and 2.5 to 4.0 t/ha in 1st and 2nd season, respectively. The investigation suggested that modern rice varieties i.e. BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan52, BR11-Saltol, BRRI dhan53 and BRRI dhan54 will be adaptable in this area and can double the rice production, and also first to mid July will be the optimum seeding date of T. Aman rice for this area.

  1. To validate the newly developed varieties suitable for various cropping systems in the locality.
  2. To find out the suitable planting time for these varieties in tidal areas.

The experiment was conducted in two consecutive Transplanted Aman (T. Aman) seasons at Bazarkhali, Amtoli, Barguna in 2011 and 2012.  In both the seasons, three sets of experiment were conducted in different seedling dates following randomized complete block design (RCB) with three replications using twelve varieties including one local check (Sadamota) and 2-3 seedlings per hill were transplanted. In 2011 T. Aman season, seeding was done in three different dates (24 June, 15 July and 16 August) and twenty-one days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. In 2012 T. Aman season, 1st and 2nd sets were transplanted in three replications and 3rd set was transplanted in two replications and seeding was done in three different dates (24 June, 15 July and 07 August). Twenty one, 29 and 23 days old seedlings were transplanted (15 July, 13 August and 30 August); used different aged seedlings because to adjust water depth in the main field due to high rainfall. The spacing was 20 X 15 cm. Land preparation for rice cultivation was done by 3-4 times plowing and cross-plowing followed by laddering. TSP-MP-Gypsum-ZnSO4 @ 53-83-61-10 kg per hectare was applied before final land preparation. Seed rate was 16-20 kg seeds per hectare. Urea was applied @ 152 kg per hectare in three installments. First, 2nd and 3rd installments of urea were applied at 7-10 days after transplanting, 4-5 tillering stage and 5-7 days before panicle initiation, respectively. Hand weeding was done when deemed necessary. In first season, the 2nd set was completely submerged from 5-9 August and caused huge damage except BRRI dhan51 and BRRI dhan52 (two submergence tolerant varieties). The water depth was 40-45 cm. Only one replication was able to transplant due to seedlings shortage. Thus complete data was not obtained in the 2nd set and statistical analysis was not done. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean comparisons based on Least Significant Difference (LSD) were performed using SAS Statistical Analysis System package (SAS, USA).

Six varieties viz. BRRI dhan33 and BRRI dhan53 from the early group and BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BR11-Saltol and BRRI dhan54 form the medium duration group were recommended for cultivation to improve the productivity of southern coastal region of Bangladesh (low or no salt affected areas). Considering three sowing dates the best performance was found for seeding on 15 July in both seasons. From this investigation it was recommended that the optimum time of seeding for this area is first to mid of July.
