Comparative Yield and Quality Performances of Eighteen Tea Seed Stocks

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out with eighteen tea seed stocks collected from the tea estates located in the greater districts of Sylhet and Chittagong. The stocks varied in their origin and plant types. The study was carried out to assess the yield and quality attributes of the stocks and their suitability to use as standard general seed source. It revealed that all the stocks fairly competed with the control BTSI in terms of yield while in quality. some Manipuri stocks appeared inferior (below average) in the cup as expected. Other stocks had acceptable average to above average quality. Considering yield, quality and overall genetic variability it is suggested to preserve the stocks as standard seed source.

Objectives:

To assess the yield and quality of eighteen general tea seed stocks collected from different tea estates of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in the Bilashcherra experiment farm of Bangladesh Tea Research Institute. At the beginning of the investigation, seeds were collected from the 18 seed baries (seed orchard) of 15 tea estates located in greater Sylhet and Chittagong districts during 1985-86. After seed collection, seedlings were raised at BTRI nursery under normal nursery practices. Eighteen months old seedlings were planted in tillah slopes at Bilashcherra experimental farm in 1987 under two separate trials - Trial-I and Trial-2 each having nine seed stocks. In the Trial-I, the seed stocks Amo (Rajghar), Nalua (New), Kodala, New Samanbagh, Horrincherra, Allynugger (Kamarcherra), Allynugger (Polyclonal), Noyapara (Dumduma) and Noyapara (Rajghar) were included. In Trial -2 seed stocks, Arno (Boh), Chatlapore, Shumshernugger, Chundeecherra, Mirtinga, Patrakhola, Kurmah, Dalai and Nurjahan were included. The experimental design was randomised block with three replications each and plants were planted at 120 cm x 60 cm spacing. In both the trails, seedlings were tested against standard BTRI biclonal seed stock BTSI. Usual cultural practices were followed in the trial field. Leaves were plucked weekly during the cropping seasons through out the experimental period and yield data were recorded. Yield data were analysed statistically for each year and also over the years. The yield data were analysed and presented separately for each trial at immature (0 - 5^th year) and at mature stage (6^th - 13^th year). The yield was expressed as mean yield of green leaf g per plant. The made tea kg per hectare was also calculated for each stock for easy comparison. Average yield as made tea kg per hectare was also calculated for each stock at immature and mature stage. The overall quality of made tea of all the seed stocks manufactured by Roll- CTC method in the mini-tea factory was assessed by organoleptic test and scored numerically.

Achievement/Findings:

In general, all the seed stocks studied were found to have more or less similar yield trend as BTS I when analysed individually year wise. Only two stocks were found low yielder when analysed over the years but their cup quality was acceptable regarding seed jats and one of them produced tea of above average quality as BTSI. Only some Manipuri stocks were found below average in the cup but Manipuri stocks are known to thrive better in stress conditions. Considering yield and quality and also their genetic variability all the seed stocks need to be preserved and seeds from these seed baries can be used as standard "General" seed source.
