Irrigation and Water Management Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701, Bangladesh

A field demonstration was conducted to apply supplemental irrigation for timely transplanting of T. Aus crop, to increase Aus rice production by mitigation of early drought occurrence through supplemental irrigation and  to increase water productivity. The demonstrations were executed at Khejmotpur and Kashimpur villages of Pirgonj Upazilla, Dabra and Rashidpur villages of Mithapukur upazilla and South Hajipur village of Taragonj upazilla in Rangpur district, Sardar Para and Chagmari villages of Sadar Upazilla in Nilphamari district, East Hiramanik and Kismot Harati villages of Sadar upazill in Lalmonirhat district. Eleven demonstrations were performed in the year 2013 in Rangpur region. Farmer’s plots were divided in two plots. One was selected as research plot and another plot was considered as farmer’s plot. Research plots followed the research management and farmer’s plots followed the farmer’s management. BRRI dhan48 was the test variety for the selected farmer’s fields. In Rangpur region, performance of BRRI dhan48 is promising. At early stage it is required to establish the crop by supplemental irrigation which is depend on rainfall. To avoid pest infestation it is required to cultivate this variety under cluster system.

Due to insufficient rainfall in April, land preparations were done by applying irrigation both the Research and Farmer’s plots and were transplanted in all the research plots within 2nd week of April. In the early stage of rice crop, sufficient amount of supplemental irrigations were applied in the plot of research practice and the plot of farmer practice was applied deficit irrigation. i.e. depended on rainfall. Irrigation was applied by using polyethylene pipe due to lake of maintenance of irrigation channels in the fields. In the panicle initiation stage, irrigation was applied due to two week of drought to mitigate the early drought of T. Aus. During flowering, sufficient rainfall occurred over the rest of growing period. In research management plots, highest yield was obtained at Kashimpur of Pirgonj upazilla which was about 5.38 t/ha and lowest yield was at Lalmonirhat Sadar upazilla which was about 2.24 t/ha. In Farmer’s management plots, the highest and the lowest yields were 3.75 t/ha and 1.56 t/ha, respectively found at the same locations which were obtained in the Research management plots. In Rangpur region farmers are not conscious about the transplanting date of T. Aus rice crop. Highest yield found at village Kashimpur, Pirganj upazilla due to follow the clustering technique of cultivation of T. Aus with the help of DAE. Disease infestation occurred relatively low as a result yield was high Pirganj upazilla. But at Lalmonirhat, Aus crop was grown in a single field and there was no other crop stand surrounding the field as a result disease infestation occurred acutely and found low yield. On the other hand farmers are not aware about the benefit of supplemental irrigation at the early stage of T. Aus cultivation. Applying timely supplemental irrigation at the early stage of research management plots could enhance the crop production compared to farmer’s management plots. Proper management with 7-10 supplemental irrigations at the early stage could increase yield up to 30 -50% compared to farmer’s management practice. Average water productivity (WP) also increased marginally from 0.31 to 0.33 by following research management practice.
