Irrigation and Water Management Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701, Bangladesh

A field demonstration was conducted to mitigate terminal drought by applying supplemental irrigation, to increase rice production as well as water productivity and to maximize rice yield by rainwater harvesting after rainfall. The demonstrations were conducted at Mithapukur and Pirgonj upazilla of Rangpur; Sadar upazilla of Lalmonirhat and Sadar and Jaldhaka upazilla of Nilphamari districts. Supplemental irrigation was applied at research plot whereas farmer’s plot was considered as rainfed. In the rainwater harvesting demonstration, research plot was adopted 15 cm levee height for sufficient rain water conservation under rainfed condition whereas farmer’s plot was followed farmer’s practice. Rainfall was measured in the experimental site with a rain gage. Flexible polythene pipes were delivered to the farmers to applying supplemental irrigation due to damage of irrigation canals in the fields during rainy season. The results of field demonstrations indicate that the impact of supplemental irrigation mainly depends on rainfall distribution patterns and the last precipitation of the season. Generally farmers transplant paddy in July/August and harvested it in November/December during T. Aman season. Rainfall amount become less at the later part of the T. Aman season, in the months of October-November. Terminal drought may occur at this part of growing season of T. Aman season. Under this situation, 1 to 3 timely supplemental irrigation could produce on an average 28.28 percent more yield in Rangpur region Water productivity can be increased from 0.46 to 0.55 kg/m3 with improved management and favorable irrigated condition in Rangpur region. Result also reported that average 1.73 kg of paddy rice could be grown by applying one cubic meter of water as supplemental irrigation over rain-fed condition at the proper time in Rangpur region. Rainwater harvesting by levee management during rainfall in the farmer’s fields, mean grain yield increased by 14.37 percent in Rangpur region. So, preparing higher levee than normal practice around the rice field to conserve rain water during rainy season is an easy and effective water management practice. It can harvest rainwater which is subjected to waste, serve rice water demand during the T. Aman season and does not involve any cost regarding irrigation purpose. The levee or bund height should be 15-20 cm and need proper maintenance from land preparation to end of the season.

About 1 to 3 supplemental irrigation were applied at farmer’s fields of Rangpur region in T. Aman, 2013. The mean grain yield of rain-fed rice in Rangpur region is about 4.48 t/ha but ranges from 4.06 to 5.29 t/ha depending on the precipitation amount and distribution and agronomic factors. These yield levels are much below the yield potential of rice under supplemental irrigation which is about 5.73 t/ha and ranges from 5.10 to 6.85 t/ha. Applying 77.6 mm of additional water to rain-fed rice crop increased yield by 28.28 percent over that of rain-fed receiving mean rainfall of 971.4 mm.  Average rainwater productivity of rice grains in Rangpur region is about 0.46 kg/m3 ranging from 0.40 to 0.53 kg/m3 . But on average it increased from 0.46 to 0.55 kg/m3 with improved management and favorable irrigated condition. The mean gross irrigation water productivity (GIWP) of the selected locations was 1.73 kg/m3.The mean grain yield increased by 14.37 percent under research management compared to farmer’s management in Rangpur region but ranged from 12.38 % to 17.48 %. The mean tiller number per m2 also increased from 350.5 to 359.8 in research management. According to land type 29.5% to 33.7 % more rainwater could be harvested in 15 cm levee management plot compared to farmer's management plot.
