Irrigation and Water Management Division, BRRI, Gazipur-1701, Bangladesh

A field demonstration was conducted to save irrigation water, to reduce irrigation cost, and to increase water productivity. The adoption and demonstration program of water saving technology was conducted at 6 upazillas of Rangpur region.  Mithapukur and Pirgonj upazila of Rangpur, Sadar and Rajarhat upazilla of Nilphamari and Syedpur and Jaldhaka upazilla of Nilphamari districts were selected in Boro 2013-2014. Five demonstration plots were selected as diesel operated STW and rest of 5 plots were selected as electrically operated. AWD tools were installed in the research plots whereas farmer’s plots were followed the farmer’s practice. BRRI dhan28 was the test variety during the demonstration.Electricity operated STW was found more profitable than diesel operated STW by using AWD method of irrigation. Farmers can achieve benefited from AWD technology when diesel supply is given by him in the water sharing system. On the other hand, farmers can get benefited from the AWD method in the total water sharing system when using electrically operated STW. AWD method was applied in the farmer’s field without any yield reduction. This technology is environment friendly for reducing groundwater use in the irrigated ecosystem in the climate change situation.

Irrigation water could be saved 20.56% to 36.06% following the AWD method depending on the texture of the soil in Rangpur region. Result shows that average 28.75 % water could be saved by using AWD method than farmer’s practice. About 2 to 8 number of irrigation could be saved by adopting AWD method in this region. Average diesel cost required for irrigating per hectare of land by using AWD method was Tk.7963.88 whereas this amount for farmer’s practice was Tk. 10269.21 which was about Tk. 2305.33 could be saved through AWD method.  So, AWD method requires about 22.28 % less money compares to farmer’s practice when using diesel operated STW. On the other hand, average electricity cost required for irrigating per hectare of land by accepting AWD method was Tk. 2816.26 whereas this amount was Tk. 3683.38 for farmer’s practice which was about Tk. 867.13 could be saved through AWD method. Result showed that by practicing AWD method 23.29 % electricity cost could be saved compare to farmer’s practice which was little bit higher than diesel operated STW. So, electricity operated STW is more suitable than diesel operated STW from the economic point of view if it is ensuring regular supply of electricity. However, money can be saved from both the operating system by following AWD method of irrigation but seasonal water sharing system is fixed in both the system. The highest water productivity was 0.67 kg/m3 of BRRI dhan28 at Mithapukur upazilla of Rangpur district and the lowest was 0.50 kg/m3 of same variety at Rajarhat upazilla of Kurigram district under AWD method. The highest water productivity by farmer’s practice was 0.49 kg/m3 and the lowest was 0.37 kg/m3 at Sadar upazilla of Kurigram and Syedpur upazilla of Nilphamari district, respectively. The average water productivity under AWD and farmer’s practice were 0.60 kg/m3 and 0.42 kg/m3, respectively which was about 42.86 % higher than farmer’s practice. But there was no significant yield difference between AWD and farmer’s practice. AWD method produces more paddies with less amount of water than farmer’s practice.
