Crop and Water Management for Crop Intensification in the Coastal Region of Bangladesh. (cpwf Project)-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to increase cropping system production and profitability through: increasing cropping intensity (triple cropping: aus-aman-boro, aus-aman-rabi); use of improved rice (optimum duration for triple cropping, stress tolerance and high yielding) and rabi varieties; improved agronomic management; and improve drainage system. The study was conducted to polder 30 and polder 43/2F. In many areas of the coastal region, river water is not saline throughout the year. Therefore, there is tremendous potential to increase food production by using tidal river water through the adoption of new crop varieties, timely crop establishment, improved crop and water management, and cropping system intensification and diversification. In Bazarkhali of Barguna district, freshwater is available in the rivers almost year round. The low yielding aman-grasspea (2.0-3.5 t/ha rice and 0.50 t/ha grasspea per year) or aus-aman system (about 6 t/ha rice/year) can be replaced by triple cropping (aus-aman-boro or aus-aman-rabi) using high yielding and stress tolerant rice and rabi varieties of suitable duration. Total annual production can be increased in the polder areas over the farmers’ practice. In moderately saline areas like kismotfultola, Batiaghata of Khulna District, where freshwater is limited during the dry season, the productivity of the traditional aman-sesame system (2.0-3.5 t/ha rice and less than 1.0 t/ha sesame per year) can be increased through adoption of high yielding aman varieties (4-5 t/ha) followed by Boro rice (5.5-6.0 t/ha) and high yielding rabi crops such as sesame and mungbean (1.0 t/ha).

The study site was polder 30 and 43/2F. Two cropping pattern such as Aus-Aman-Boro or Aus-Aman-Rabi were used. In Bazarkhali Maize, Sunflower, Sesame, Watermelon and Chilli was cultivated. In Batiaghata, Mungbean and Sesamen were cultivated. Achievement/Findings:

In Bazarkhali, yearly 15.35 t/ha of rice was obtained for the Aus-Aman-Boro cropping system and in Aus-Aman-Rabi cropping system it was 7.47 t/ha rice. About 9.06 t/ha of Maize, 3.72 t/ha of Sunflower, 0,49 t/ha of Sesame, 37.59 t/ha of Watermelon and 2.88 t/ha of Chilli was obtained. In Batiaghata, yearly production of rice was 9.53 t/ha for Aman-Boro cropping system and for Aman-Rabi cropping system yield of rice, Mungbean and Sesamen were 4.52 t/ha, 0.73 t/ha and 0.48 t/ha, respectively.
