Coordinated Project on Water Management for Enhancing Crop Production Under Changing Climate: BRRI Component. Trial: Studies on Irrigation Schedules of Non-rice Crops for Optimum Yield and Water Use-2014

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to conjunctive use of water resources in the study area; to develop appropriate water management technologies for increasing crop production, cropping intensity, irrigation efficiency, land and water productivity for improved livelihood; and to identify water resources management technologies to mitigate consequences of climate change. Study sites were Satkhira, Kapasia and Bakergonj. Irrigation treatments were supplemental irrigation applied and rainfed. In Satkhira area, higher yield of Mustard, Wheat and Potato was obtained under recommended management practice over the farmers practice. The recommended management practice gave 30%, 13% and 16% higher yield of mustard, wheat and potato respectively compared to farmer’s level of management. Farmers used less water than the recommended level. In Kapasia site, the average yield of lentil and sugarcane were 1.9 t/ha and 70 t/ha under recommended management practice which was 1.7 t/ha and 60 t/ha respectively under farmers management practice. Farmers did not supply irrigation for lentil. During rabi season 2012 in Kapasia site irrigation water was not required for lentil because of highly vegetative growth of crop. Soil moisture was determined by oven dry method and it was found 25 % on 25 December, 2011 and 16 % on 15 February, 2012. In Bakerganj area, as a relay crop grass pea gave 0.5 t/ha grain yield. There was no irrigation supply. So, the yield was same under both researchers’ management and farmers’ management.

Objectives:

To identify water resources management technologies to mitigate consequences of climate change.

Methodology:

Study sites were Satkhira, Kapasia and Bakergonj. Two irrigation treatments were followed as T₁=Supplemental irrigation (Research Management) and T₂=Rainfed (farmers' practice). Soil moisture was determined by oven dry method. Mustard, wheat, potato, lentil and grass pea was used as robi and relay crop. BARI sharisha 7, Sourav, Diamont, BARI moshur 4 and BARI kheshari 2 were used as variety of mustard, wheat, potato, lentil and grass pea. Wheat was sown on 10 November at the rate of 120 kg/ha. Before harvesting of Aman rice, grass pea was sown with the rate of 45 kg/ha. Lentil (seed rate of 35 kg/ha) and potato (seed rate1.5 t/ha) was sown on 2 November. Mustard was sown on 1 October. About 250:170:85:150:6:12 , 220:130:230:110:15:12 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc sulfate and boric acid was used for mustard and potato, respectively. About 180:140:45:110 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum was used for wheat. Also about 45:85:35 and 45:85:35 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP was used for lentil and grass pea. More over 7-10 t/ha cowdung was used for wheat and some micro-organism was used for lentil and grass pea.
