Assessment of Supplied Water Quality of Sutrapur Thana, Dhaka

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study revealed that most of the physicochemical water quality parameters of the water samples were within the standard values. Coliform count for all the water samples exceeded the standard values prescribed by Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules 1997. The count for total Coliform of all the water samples ranged from 14 to 48 per 100mL and that for the Faecal Coliform ranged from 6 to 26 per 100mL. The overall study states that, the municipal water supplied by DWASA at Sutrapur Thana in Dhaka is not safe at all for domestic use, particularly for drinking purpose, and consumption of this highly contaminated water may be the prime cause of the water borne health hazards suffered by the peoples of Sutrapur Thana.

Objectives:

1. The research project was undertaken to appraise the present municipal water quality supplied at Sutrapur Thana and the associated health related problems of the local dwellers.

Methodology:

In the research project, both primary and secondary data have been used. To have a quantitative data of the quality of municipal water supplied in Sutrapur Thana, 36 water samples (4 samples from each sampling unit for different parameters) were collected from 9 sampling units of 3 locations named Banagram, Luximibazar and Gandaria of Sutrapur Thana. The water samples were analyzed in the water quality laboratory of “NGO Forum for Drinking Water” in Dhaka. The water samples were collected in sterilized bottles. The mouths of the bottles, used for collecting samples for microbial analysis, were rinsed carefully with ethanol to avoid contamination. The bottles used for collecting samples for metal analysis were filled with acid to keep the pH of the water samples low while carried and kept in it. So, sample in those bottles were collected very carefully so that the sample water (with acid) may not overflow from the bottles. Collected samples were carried to the laboratory within six hours of collection. Simple laboratory method was applied to assess the physicochemical parameters (pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, total suspended solid, total hardness, alkalinity and chlorides) and the biological parameters (Total Coliform count and Faecal Coliform count) of those samples.

Achievement/Findings:

The dwellers of Sutrapur Thana are suffering not only from inadequate water supply but also from contamination of the municipal water. The study revealed that the microbial quality of water is severely deteriorated during its flow from source point through the distribution system. Therefore, the municipal water supplied at Sutrapur Thana may not be safe considering the microbiological water quality standard. And the people of Sutrapur Thana are regularly suffering from water borne diseases because of consuming contaminated water and spending a lot for the medication of those diseases. In many cases the situation pushes them towards a financial hardship. Therefore, it can be concluded from the study that the water quality supplied by DWASA at Sutrapur Thana is imposing significant threat to community health of that area due to its severe microbial contamination. One of the major tasks to ensure improved microbial water quality in the DWASA distribution system is to prevent from faecal contamination that might build up near pipes or contaminate surface or soil water. Public awareness can definitely play an important role to help prevent such problems.
