Labour Employment in Crop Enterprises in Selected Areas of Bogra District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at Bogra district during 1996-97 crop year to identify the major factors that are responsible for variation in labour employment in crop enterprises. In this study multiple regression co-efficient analysis was used. Twelve explanatory variables were employed to explain human labour employment. Five variables included were significant in explaining the employment. Regression co-efficient of gross cropped area and gross income were statistically significant and positive. The result of the study revealed that hired labour contributed 75% of total human labour use per household due to increased cropping intensity in the area. The model explained 79% to 94% variation of employment under three categories of farms for all the variables included in the model.

Objectives:

1. To analyse the mangitude of human labour employment in crop enterprises.

2. To identify the factors influencing variation in labour employment in crop enterprises.

Methodology:

The study was carried out with primary data based on three villages, namely Hamidpur, Dowarepara and Kholishakura of Gaptali thana under Bogra district. All the households of these villages were classified into three categories on the basis of operational holdings, such as small (0.02 ha to less than one ha), medium (one ha to less than two ha) and large (two ha and above) farm and the size of farm was adopted by the farming system research (FSR) programme. Thus 30 farmers from each category of farm were selected. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were followed in this study. The data were collected through well-designed schedules by interviewing the respondents once in a month during the year 1996-97. In the study, both the tabular and statistical techniques were used to know the effect of using inputs and other related factors on labour employments. Four crops, namely, rice, wheat, potato and mustard were grown in a farm, the gross value of these crops in value terms was taken as the variable. This variable considers the sum total of all the products plus by-products, if any.

Achievement/Findings:

With the increase of farm size, the average number of workers increases. It could be attributed to the large family size which provides more number of workers in large farm. Hired labour use has also positive relationship with large farm and contributes more than that of others. Multiple regression co-efficient analysis estimates gross cropped area and gross value of Agril. crop production has positive relationship on human labour employment through contribution varies among the farm categories.
