Effects of Planting Date and Nitrogen Level on the Storability and Incidence of Diseases in Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Onion cultivar Faridpur Bhati was transplanted at three dates (28 December 4 January and 11 January ) and fertilized with four level of N ( 0, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha) The harvested onions were stored in a well ventilated wooden crate for a period of six months. Monthly observations indicated continued loss of bulb weight and increase in disease incidence with progress of storage time in all treatments. Bulbs from 11 January planting had significantly higher weight loss than bulbs from 28 December and 4 January plantings. Variations in loss of bulb weight due to N application were not significant. Date of planting and nitrogen level both significantly affected the incidence of disease during storage. Highest disease incidence (32.3%) was recorded in the bulbs from last planting. Nitrogen @ 100 kg/ha caused minimum diseases ( 12.5%) while it was maximum (20.3%) at 0 kg N/ha. Black mould rot ( Aspergillus niger) was predominant among the diseases.

Objectives:

To investigate the effects of date of transplanting and N levels on the storability and incidence of diseases in onion

Methodology:

Six weeks old seedlings of onion cv. Faridpur Bhati were transplanted on 28 December 1989, 4 and 11 January 1990. Four doses of nitrogen ( 0, 50, 75 and 100 kg N/ha ) were applied in two splits at 30 days interval after transplanting. The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in split-plot design with three replications. There were 12 treatment combinations. The unit plot size was 1m x 1m which accommodated 100 seedlings in 10 rows. Cowdung, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were applied @ 20t, 180kg and 136 kg/ha, respectively as basal dose during land preparation. Irrigation, weeding and pesticide spray were done as and when needed. The pH of the soil was 6.6 and it contained 0.093% nitrogen, 15.08 ppm phosphorus, 0.25me/100g potash and 1.108% organic carbon. The bulbs were harvested on 11 April, 1990. Old outer scales and tips were removed. The bulbs were kept on the floor under constant air circulation until the necks were completely dried. The bulbs were then stored on 22 April 1990 in small compartments ( 30cm x 25cm x 25cm) of a wooden crate placed in well ventilated veranda of the department of horticulture. There were three compartment representing each of 12 treatment combinations. A sample of 800 gm cured bulbs were stored in the compartments. Monthly observations on loss in bulb weight, and incidence of diseases were made for a period of six months beginning from 22 May to 22 October 1990. The causal organisms of the diseases were isolated and identified.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of present investigation, it can be suggested that onion should be transplanted by first week of January or earlier in order to improve its storage capability. However, further studies should be carried out before making any recommendation.
