Effects of Seedling Age and Fertilizer Management Practice on Growth and Yield of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maximum yield (39.72 t/ha) of tomato cv. pusa Ruby was obtained by planting 35 days old seeding and by application of both organic manure and chemical fertilizer. Combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer was more effective than application of either alone. There was significant interaction between seeding age and fertilizer management practices. Application of manure and fertilizer was more effective on older seedlings in improving tomato yield.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum age of seedlings for transplanting in the field and suitable fertilizer management practice to maximize the production of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from October 1987 to March 1988. The soil of the experimental area belongs to Brahmaputra alluvial tract which was sandy loam in texture with a PH 6.6. The nutrient status of the soil was determined before cropping. The soil contained 0.68% organic carbon, 0.056% N, 23.57 ppm available P and 0.34 me/100g exchangeable K. The tomato cultivar used in the experiment was 'Pusa Ruby' The seeds of cv. Pusa Ruby were procured from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, Mymensingh. Treatments in the experiment included three seedling ages and four fertilizer management practices. Seedlings were 21, 28 and 35 days old from sowing. The fertilizer management practices were as follows: F₀: Control with no organic manure or chemical fertilizers. F₁: Only organic manure (cowdung) @ 16t/ha. F₂: Only chemical fertilizer viz,. urea, triple superphosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) @ 200, 150 and 50 kg/ ha, respectively. F₃: Organic manure + chemical fertilizers viz., cowdung @ 8t/ha, and urea, TSP, MP @ 100, 75 and 25 kg/ha, respectively. A factorial randomized complete block design with three replications was used in the experiment. Full doses of cowdung and TSP were applied at the time of final land preparation. Urea and MP were applied in two installments as side-dressing, after 20 and 40 days of transplanting. The seeds were sown in the seed beds at three different dates on 25 October, 1 November and 8 November, 1987 to obtain three seedling ages and all were transplanted in the main field on 29 November 1987 maintaining a spacing of 60cm between the rows and plants. The unit plots were 2.4m x 2.4m in size which accommodated 16 plants. Cultural practices such as weeding, earthling up, pruning and irrigation were done as and when required. The crop was harvested over a period from 25 February to 30 March 1988.

Achievement/Findings:

Highest yield of 33.61 tons per hectare was obtained from 35 days old seedlings while the lowest yield (21.8 t/ha) was obtained from 21 days seedlings. Combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer was more effective than application of either alone. There was significant interaction between seeding age and fertilizer management practices. Application of manure and fertilizer was more effective on older seedlings in improving tomato yield.
