Effects of Growing Conditions, Planting Time and Duration of Bulb Vernalization on Seed Production of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Onion bulbs of cv. Taherpuri were planted on 1, 15 and 30 November under polythene tunnel and in the open field after vernalization of bulbs for 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks to assess their effects on seed production. The crop raised under polythene tunnel gave significantly higher seed yield compared vernalization also influenced the seed production of onion and the highest seed yield. Duration of bulb weeks vernalized bulbs. There was significant interaction among growing condition × planting time × duration of bulb vernalization. The highest seed yield (1061.53 kg/ha) was obtained from the treatment combination of onion seed crop planted on 1 November under polythene tunnel using 4 weeks vernalized bulbs.

Objectives:

To study the effects of polyethylene protection, duration of bulb vernalization and planting time on the production of quality onion seeds under the climatic conditions of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Onion bulbs cv. Taherpuri were vernalized at 10 ± 2 in a refrigerator for 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks and planted in the open field and under polythene tunnel on 1, 15 and 30 November at a spacing of 20 × 20cm. The polythene tunnel was made by covering a ready made steel frame with transparent polythene of 0.2mm in thickness. The sides of the tunnel were erected from the ground level which was protected by wire net. The control bulbs were kept under ordinary room conditions. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ 10 tons cowdung, 404kg mustard oil cake, 175kg urea, 125kg triple superphosphate (TSP) and 150kg muriate of potash (MP) per hectare. The three-factor experiment was laid out in split-split plot design with three replications. The unit plot size was 1.0m × 1.0m. Growing condition, planting time and bulb vernalization were assigned to main plot, sub-plot and sub--sub-plot, respectively. Data on different yield contributing characters and yield were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each treatment combination and analyzed for interpretation of results.

The highest seed yield (1061.53 kg/ha) was obtained from the treatment combination of onion seed crop planted on 1 November under polythene tunnel using 4 weeks vernalized bulbs. The results of the present experiment indicates that vernalization of onion bulbs before planting gave comparatively higher yield than the control i.e, non- vernalized bulbs. Therefore, for large scale production of onion seed, cold storages used for potato can be used for vernalization of onion bulbs before planting. The results of the present experiment also indicated that polythene protection gives higher yield and good quality onion seed and may be recommended for early planting and protecting the seed crop from natural hazards during maturity under the climatic conditions of Bangladesh provided there is no problem of hail storm and strong wind.
