A field experiment on water requirement of carrot was carried out to compare effect of optimum soil moisture level, total water use and water use efficiencies of carrot production under different moisture regimes. There were five different water regimes (I0) no irrigation, (I1) allowing 60% depletion of soil available water (SAW), (l2) allowing 45% depletion of SAW, (l3) allowing 30% depletion of SAW, and (l4) allowing 15% depletion of SAW. Highest carrot yield of 40.2 t/ha was obtained under 15% depletion of soil available water but it was similar to other treatments except the control (I0). Total water used by the crop was also maximum (111.36 mm) under this treatment. The total use efficiency was highest (4189 kg/ha/cm) under the treatment allowing 60% depletion of SAW (I0). The lowest yield of carrot (14.88 t/ha) was recorded under no irrigation treatment. The total water use efficiency (2730 kg/ha/cm) was also the lowest under this treatment. Maintenance of higher moisture regimes was conducive to most of the plant characters, and the production of higher yield. However, considering the yield per unit water application, the treatment allowing 60% depletion of SAW had the best performance.

To find optimum soil moisture level, total water use and water use efficiency in the production of carrot.

The experiment was carried out at the Shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil of the Experimental Farm of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Salna during the winter season of 1989-90. The soil was sandy clay loam to clay loam having a pH 6.2. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design having five irrigation treatments replicated four times. The treatments were: l1= No irrigation, l1= Allowing 60% depletion of soil available water, l2= Allowing 45% depletion of soil available water, l3= Allowing 30% depletion of soil available water, l4= Allowing 15% depletion of soil available water. Plot size was 3.00 x 2.25m. Plots were raised to about 10cm above the ground and ridges were made around each plot to prevent the lateral run-off water. Well rotten cowdung was applied to the experimental field @ 10 t/ha and incorporated into the soil during land preparation. N P K were applied @ 70, 60 and 105 kg per hectare, respectively, in the form of urea, TSP and MP as there was no fertilizer recommendation for carrot in the BARC Fertilizer Recommendation Guide. Full dose of TSP and one third each of urea and MP were applied as basal dose. The rest of urea and MP were topdressed in equal splits at 25 and 45 days after seeding. Seeds of New Kuroda- an imported hybrid variety of carrot were sown in lines 25 cm apart on 8 November 1989. Thinning of seedlings was done maintaining plant to plant spacing of 10 cm. The crop was harvested on 19 February 1990, and data on yield and yield contributing parameters were recorded. Different soil physical properties were studied both in the field and in the laboratory to different soil depths. Soil texture was determined by Hydrometer method. Particle density (2.70 g/cm3) of soil was determined by Pycnometer method. Bulk density of soil was determined by using core sampler. Soil strength was determined by using Field capacity (40.05% by volume) was determined by Field method and the wilting point (20.73% by volume) was measured by using Pressure Plate Membrane. Soil moisture at field capacity was determined by saturating a small portion of the field by water and allowing the gravitational water to percolate for 3 days. Soil moisture was determined gravimatrically in successive layers to a depth of 30cm at an interval of 7 days from sowing to crop harvest for computing the soil moisture depletion and irrigation requirement of the crop. Seasonal soil water depletion (S) was calculated by summing the individual soil water depletion values (s) of each sampling interval. The total water use (TWU) of crop was computed by adding measured quantities of irrigation water, the effective rainfall and the contribution of moisture from soil. Irrigation requirements (time and quantity) were determined on the basis of soil moisture status in each treatment. Irrigation time was determined by comparing the existing soil moisture value of the specific irrigation treatment with the critical moisture level of allowable depletion of available water of that treatment. It was considered to be the time of irrigation when moisture status reached or fell just below the critical level of allowable depletion of available water. Irrigation water was applied to bring the soil moisture content to field capacity.

The present findings indicated that though the most of the plant characters including yield have favourably responded with increased soil moisture regimes but considering the yield per unit water application, a moisture depletion of 60 percent of soil available water may be allowed to get a good yield of carrot under the Shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil of IPSA Farm.
