Performance of Some Exotic and Local Cultivars of Sweet Potato in the Winter and Summer Climates of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The yield performance of some exotic and local cultivars of sweet potato both as winter and summer crop was studied at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm during the year 1980-81. Out of 40 cultivars grown in winter, the yield of top 10 cultivars ranged between 52.8 to 37.8 t/ha. The 10 cultivars were, TIS-2328, BNAS White, Norin (S), Tinirining, AIS-243-2, Cinjhi, TlS-3030, Red Tuber Tail, Kokeia and Philippine No.2. Whereas, in summer season, only a few cultivars yielded more than 20 t/ha. The yield of the cultivar BNAS White was remarkably high in summer ( 42.8 t/ha). Among the cultivars studied, the storage ability of the cultivars Acc.6, TIS-3032, TlS-3247, AIS-230 and A1S-243-2 were quite good. Tainung New 10 and TIS-3032 had a long rest period.

Objectives:

To select improved varieties of sweet potato for growing both in winter and summer season in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Forty cultivars of sweet potato including some high yielding types of Nigeria, Taiwan, Japan, Philippines and U. S. A. were included in the trial. Vine cuttings from the plants multiplied at the Horticulture Farm were used as the planting material. Planting was done on 30 November ,1980. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of the unit plots was 3.66m X 3.0Cm, which accommodated 60 plants with the spacing of 60cm x 30cm. The crop was harvested on 14 April, 1981, after 136 days of planting. Out of 40 cultivars tried in the winter season, 31 cultivars including two local types were taken for the summer trial. Planting was done on 15 July, 1981. Method of planting, design of experiment, size of unit plots and plant spacings were identical to those of the winter trial. The crop was harvested on 3 December, 1981, after 141 days of planting. In both the trials, manures and fertilizer, were applied at the rates of 18 tons of cowdung, 133 kg of urea, 100 kg of triple super phosphate and 180 kg of muriate of potash per hectare. Cowduog and triple super phosphate were applied during land preparation, while urea and muriate of potash were applied in two equal installments as side-dressing, after 30 and 60 days of planting. The temperature and rainfall data of the two growing seasons are shown. Storage behaviour of the tuberous roots obtained from the winter trial was studied. However, studies could be made on 38 cultivars out of 40 of the winter trial. The two missing cultivars were U. S. A. No. 1 and Local. Ten kilograms of clean and fresh sweet potatoes from each of the cultivars harvested on 14 April, 1981 were stored in single layers inside the well-ventilated wooden shelves.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield data of the present experiment and that of a previous trial suggest that the cultivars TIS-232g, BNAS White, Kokeia and Philippine No, 2 may be tentatively selected for winter growing in Bangladesh. However, for summer growing, the cultivars BNAS White, Tinirining, Oki, nawa, AIS-243-2, Norin and U. S. A. No.1 appear promising. The study also indicates that the storage of sweet potato under ordinary room conditions can be improved considerably by selecting cultivars with better keeping quality. In this respect, the cultivars Ace-6, TIS- 3032, TIS-3247, AIS-230 and AIS-243-2 are worth selecting. The cultivars are also reasonably high yielders.
