Effect of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potash,on the Yield of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to study the combined effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on the yield contributing characters and the gross yield of onion. The fertilizer produced positive effect in all cases. The highest dose of NPK in a combination produced the longest leaves but the highest amount of nitrogen with lowest amount of phosphorus and potash produced the largest number of leaves as well as the highest yield. The yield of onion seemed to be more related to the number of leaves than to the length of the leaves.

Objectives:

To find out the combined effect of different doses of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on the cultivation of an indigenous variety of onion.

Methodology:

The research work was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, Dhaka, and Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with an indigenous variety of onion. A combination, of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash was applied in the field at the rate of 60: 6o: 60 ; 60 : 50 : 50 ; 60 : 35 : 35; 50: 50 : 50; 35: 35 : 35; and O: O: O kg of N: P₂0₅: K₂O per hectare. The field was thoroughly prepared following ploughing and laddering. Furrows were made at a distance of 25 cm with a depth of 5 cm. The phosphate and the potash were applied in the furrows 3 days before transplantation. Half of the urea was applied as top dressing 15- days after transplantation and the remaining half was applied 30 days after the first application. The seedlings of about 8-10 cm in height were transplanted in the 1st week of January, setting in a randomized block design, replicated 4 times. The crop was harvested on the 18 th April, 1974, when most of the leaves were dried out. The number of leaves per plant, length of the leaves in cm and weight of the bulb with leaves in Kg were recorded.
