Variation in Morphological Attributes and Yield of Tomato Genotypes Over Seasons

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July 2006 to June 2007 to study the morphological attributes and yield of eight genotypes of tomato namely, J-5, Binatomato-5, BARI tomato-7, CLN-2026, CLN-2366, CLN-2413, CLN-2418 and CLN-2443 over three seasons. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The result showed that seasonal and genotypic variations and their interaction effects for plant height, number of primary branches plant^-1, number of flower clusters plant^-1, number of fruit cluster plant^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, individual fruit weight, fruit yield plant^-1, and yield (t/ha) were significant. Fruit yield and almost all the morphological attributes of tomato genotypes were high in winter followed by pre-winter and summer. Over three seasons, the genotype CLN-2366 and CLN-2443 ranked 4^th with respect to yield performance. The genotype J-5 produced the lowest number of fruits plant^-1 and fruit yield. The highest fruits plant^-1 and fruit yield were obtained from CLN-2413 with same rank of BARI tomato-7 in winter season.

Objectives:

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during July 2006 to June 2007 to study the morphological attributes and yield of eight genotypes of tomato namely, J-5, Binatomato-5, BARI tomato-7, CLN-2026, CLN-2366, CLN-2413, CLN-2418 and CLN-2443 over three seasons. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4 m × 3 m and total plots were 24. Urea, TSP and MP of 0.066, 0.933 and 0.722 kg respectively were applied @ urea 226 kg/ha, TSP 222 kg/ha and MP 250 kg/ha and cowdung 12 ton/ha in each pot. Half of the doses of urea, full dose of TSP and MP were mixed with the soil. Rest of the urea was applied in the soils with two splits at 30 and 50 days after transplanting. The seeds were sown on 1 July for pre-winter, 5 October for winter 2006 and 2 February 2007 for summer seasons respectively. Thirty days old seedlings of tomato genotypes were transplanted in the experimental plot in the afternoon of 31 July for pre-winter, 4 November for winter 2006 and 4 March 2007 of summer seasons respectively. Observations were made on the morphological and yield attributes of tomato plant. All collected data statistically analyzed and the means were compared with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance.
