The study was conducted in Rajbari and Dinajpur districts to assess the usage pattern and profitability of PTOS (power tiller operated seeder) operations at farm level. A total of 53 service providers were interviewed for this study. The study reveals that the custom hiring of PTOS service was a profitable business in the study areas. Most respondents provide PTOS services almost throughout the year. The yearly net income of service providers was Tk. 81,003. Besides, the use of PTOS is environment friendly because it can save 40% of fuel per hectare per year and 43% less CO2 is added to the atmosphere. Although renting out PTOS service was profitable, it was constrained by some minor problems like driving by walking, roller jam, and lower depth in land preparation. The other problems were higher price of fuel and oil, non availability and higher price of spare parts, and the lack of trained driver in the study areas.

  Performance evaluation

(i) To explore the socio-economic profile of the PTOS.

(ii) To find out the usage pattern of PTOS at service providers' level

(iii) To estimate the cost and benefit of PTOS operations at farm level.

This study was conducted at fout Upazillas namely Bochagonj, Fulbari and Dinajpur Sadar under Dinajpur district and Baliakandi under Rajbari district. The reason of this selection was that PTOS is being widely used in Dinajpur and Rajbari districts. In Rajbari, PTOS is being used for sowing wheat, jute, and sesame seed directly' In Dinajpur, it is widely used for planting the seeds of wheat, maize chickpea, lentil, mungbean, jute and sesame. Nevertheless, HSRT is also being used for land preparation for transplanting onion and garlic seedlings, paddling rice field in both the areas. For the economic evaluation of PTOS operation, a total of 53 service providers taking 47 persons from Rajbari and six persons from Dinajpur district were randomly selected for the study. Data and information were gathered through household survey using pre-tested interview schedules during July, 2008. The respondents were given fruit saplings and cash incentives for providing reliable data and information for the study.

The custom hiring of PTOS/HSRT service was found to be a profitable business in the study areas. Most respondents can provide PTOS/HSRT services almost throughout the year. On an average, a service provider earns net income ranging from Tk. 20,530 to Tk. 2,I0,905 with an average of Tk. 81,003 per year. Besides, the use of PTOS/HSRT is environment friendly since it can save 40% of fuel per hectare per year and 43% less emission of CO2 into the atmosphere. Although renting out PTOS/HSRT service is profitable, it is constrained by some minor problems. They are driving by walking, roller jam and lower depth in land preparation. The other problems are higher price of fuel and oil, non-availability and higher price of spare parts and the lack of trained driver in the study areas. In order to increase adoption of PTOS/HSRT at farm level and make this service more profitable, the following policy guidelines are recommended. Demonstration activities should be strengthened in the new areas with new crops' Adequate knowledge on repair, operation and maintenance is very much important for PIOS/HSRT driver, but they didn't receive any formal training on it that often creates problems. Therefore, necessary steps should be taken to provide training on repair, operation and maintenance of the PTOS/HSRT for the service providers, mechanic and operators. Furthermore, research work should be carried out to improve the . machine with riding facilities, adding fertilizers application system with existing PTOS that will improve fertilizer uses efficiencies. Long-term soil health related experiments should be undertaken to see the implications of the PTOS use. Spare parts of the PTOS/HSRT should be available at the nearest place of the users and the prices of fuel and oil should be reduced or subsidized.
