Acacia auriculiformis produced highest amount of biomass whereas the second highest amount of biomass was produced by Eucalvpius tereticornis. The highest amount of moisture was recorded in Eucaluptus tereticornis whereas the density and tensile strength were found highest in the case of Daibergia sissoo. The values obtained for moisture and water absorption capacities by different species were more or less similar in some plant species while significantly different results were obtained in others.

To indetify the Biomass Production and Wood Characteristics of Six Multipurpose Eighteen Month-Old Tree Species

Two month old seedlings of six multipurpose tree species i.e. Acacia auricuiifonnis, Eucalvptus tereticornis, Dalbergia sissoo, Samanea satnan, Peltophorum pt erocarpum and Terminalia ariuna were obtained from local nurseries. The seedlings were planted at a field near the Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Atomic Energy Research Establishment campus at Savar, Dhaka. At first the site was densely covered with grass and before embarking on such a programme they were first of all removed and a pit of 24x2Sx30 ern were prepared. The pits were filled with equal volume of soil and cowdung. Natural field condition was maintained as far as possible. A spacing of Ixl m was kept between plants and rows. Each plot was separated by 2m. Ten trees were selected at random from the three replicates of 20-tree plots. Those were felled and measured for their biomass producting potentials and the results were ana lysed following the standard methods of statistics. Moisture content was calculated on dry weight basis. Specific gravity of wood sample was determined on oven dry basis, and tensile strength of wood samples of different ages was measured directly by Tensile Strength Machine (INSTRON, Model 1011 U.K.) integrated with personal computer/recorder (Amstrad PC 1640 HD20, US). The wood samples were dried at 100oC for 2 hours before absorption study. The water absorption capacity was measured by dipping the wood samples in water at 30°C. The rate of water absorption capacity was measured for 10 days until the weight of wood reached a steady state condition. The wood samples were fist dried at 100oC for 2 hours. The absorption experiment was carried out in an air-tight container with saturated salt solutions. The salt solutions used were NaOH, H20. MgCI2, 6H20. MgN03, 6H20. (NH4)2S04 and K2S04.

The results obtained in plant height, weight of aerial parts (main stem, branches, leaves and twigs) and root and total biomass yield of six plant species are summarized. The results indicate that Acacia auriculifonnis produced the highest amount of biomass whereas the second highest amount of biomass was produced by Eucal fptus tereticonis. The descending order in the biomass production potential in the six species was Acacia auriculiformis, Eucal fptu tereticonis, Terminalia ariuna, Peltophonun pierocarpum, Samanea sainan and Dalbergia sissoo. The results on moisture content, specific gravity and tensile strength. The higher amount of moisture content was obtained in Eucalyptus tereticornis. The density and tensile strength were found to be higher in the case of Dalbergia sissoo and Acacia auriculifonnis. A correlation was found between the specific gravity and tensile strength. The higher the specific gravity, the higher the tensile strength in a particular plant species. In the present experiment it was observed that Eucaujpius tereticornis absorbed highest amount of water. A growth study conducted indicated that A. auriculijortnis produced higher quantity of biomass compared to that of other species. Besides, this species has higher specific gravity and tensile strength. Thus, from overall considerations, it might be concluded that A. auriculifonnis has good potential for short rotation forestry in the agroclimatic conditions prevailing in the area under study.
