Combining ability for grain yield and yield components were evaluated in a 7×7 diallel fashion of water logged tolerant maize in normal condition. Significant general and specific combining ability variances were observed for some of the characters. The parental line W3 was found to be best general combiner for yield. The good combiner parents for different traits could be used in hybridization to improve yield as well as with desirable traits as donor parents for the accumulation of favorable genes. Among the studied hybrids, the crosses W1xW6   and W4xW5 exhibited highest heterosis.

To isolation for isolating superior inbred lines and better combining parents for suitable hybrids tolerant to excess soil moisture.

Seven water logged tolerant maize inbred lines were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding the reciprocals during the rabi season in 2012-2013. The resulting 21 F1’s and their were evaluated along with two checks (BARI hybrid maize 7, and NK40) in a alpha lattice design with three replications at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur in the following rabi season of 2013- 2014. Each entry planted in single row of 5 m long plot. The spacing between row to row was 75 cm and plant to plant was 20 cm. One plant per hill was maintained after proper thinning. The plants were harvested on 3rd May, 2014. Observations were recorded on ten randomly selected plants from each plot for plant height (cm), ear height (cm), ear length (cm), and 100-kernel weight (g). Days to silk, days to maturity and kernel yield were recorded on whole plot basis and yield was converted to ton/ha. Data were analyzed for variance for all the characters studied. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were estimated following Model II, Method IV by R software.

Significant differences were observed for all the characters except ear length, days to maturity and 1000 grain weight, indicating sufficient genetic variability present among the materials. The magnitude of mean squares for GCA and SCA for studied characters indicated importance of both additive and non-additive components of genetic variance in controlling these traits. W1, was good combiner having highly significant negative GCA effects both for plant and ear height. Good general combiners for major yield determining characters were W3 for earliness & W1 for dwarf plant type and longer ears. Parent W3 the best general combiner for kernel yield and also possessed significant positive GCA effects for other yield components like number of kernels per ear. The overall study of GCA effects suggests that parent W3 was a good general combiner for yield and W2 and W3 for earliness while W1 for dwarf plant type. For days to silking, two crosses W1xW6 ,andW1xW7 exhibited significant negative SCA effects, For yield contributing traits, significant positive SCA effect was observed in three crosses such as W1xW6, W1xW7  and  W2xW3   for 1000 grain weight. Among the 21 F1’s nine crosses W1xW6 , W1xW2, W1xW3, W1xW4, W1xW5, W1xW7, W3xW5, W4xW5 and  W6xW7 exhibited significant positive SCA effects for kernel yield. Against standard check BHM 7, heterosis for 1000-kernel weight was found highest (19.64%) in W1xW7 followed by W1xW3, W1xW6,  W3xW4 ,W2xW5 and W4xW5 . It showed that among the 21 F1s, 2 crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis 15.64% was exhibited by the cross W1xW6  followed by W4xW5 (8.54%).
