Activities of Invertase and Amylase in Potato Leaves as Affected by Different Nitrogenous and Potassic Fertilizers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Invertase and amylase activities in the leaves of potato as affected by the application of different nitrogenous and potassic fertilizer were studied in a green house experiment. It was observed that the application of nitrate of sodium increased the invertase activity in the leaves of potato as compared to the application of ammonium sulphate. Chloride of potash decreased the invertase activity, while sulphate of potash markedly increased the invertase activity ill the leaves of potato plants. Amylase activity was also affected by the application of fertilizers. Ammonium sulphate was found to increase the amylase activity as more tl.an the nitrate of sodium. Potassium chloride, however, increased amylase activity in the leaves of polato by 2-3 folds over potassium sulphate.

Objectives:

To the leaves of potato as affected by different form, of nitrogenous and potassic fertilizers.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in it green house attached to the Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University. Fertilizers used in the experiment included N_aNO_a and (NH₄)₂S0₄ as the sources of N; KCI and K₂S0₄ as the sources of K and granular super phosphate as the only source of P. All the fertilizers used in the experiment except super phosphate were chemically pure. The experiment was laid down in paraffinised wooden boxes. Each box was filled with 35 kg soil. Ferti-lizers were applied at the rate of 60 kg/hectare. The stipulated amount of the fertilize. was applied in rows at a depth of 10 em which was subsequently covered with loose soil. Potato seeds were placed 3.4 em above the zone of applied fertilizer to avoid direct contact of the seeds with the fertilizer. The experiment was replicated thrice.The experiment was conducted with a Russian variety of potato (Lork variety) for 2 successive years on Dernova podsolic soils. The agro-chemical characteristics. of the soil used were as follows : pH 5-6 humus 2'2%. avallable phosphorus (P₂0₅) 9'0 mg% and available potash (K₂O) 7.6 mg%. Plant materials were collected thrice during the vegetative period for analytical studies in the laboratory. Potato. leaves were analysed for invertase and amylase activities by the methods given by Pleskov (5).
