Effect of Method of Culture and Depth of Planting of Seeds on the Yield of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three methods of culture (ridge, mulch and flat) with three depths of planting (1 inch, 2 inches and 3 inches) of seeds were compared. Depth of planting did not affect the time of emergence of the plants but it influenced the height of the plants. Tallest plants were obtained from planting at a depth of 3 inches followed by 2 inches and 1 inch respectively, Deeper planting also resulted in increase in the number of underground nodes but this did not lead to any increase in the number of stolons and tubers. Among the methods of culture, mulching produced taller plants and gave significantly higher yield as compared to the other methods. Depth of planting did not have any effect on the yield of tubers.

Objectives:

To compare the three methods which with minor variations cover the entire potato acreage of the country
To determine the depth of condition of planting which is most appropriate in relation to the methods of culture

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm during the winter season of 1972- 73. The variety of potato used was Ultimus which is of Holland origin. The three methods of culture compared were : 1) Ridge method: In this method the seed-tubers were planted in furrows dug out in level land. After the emergence of the plants, ridges were raised along the rows. Irrigation was done twice applying half an acre-inch of water each time. 2) Mulch method : Seed-tubers were planted as in the ridge method and after emergence of the plants, the soil was covered with dried water hyacinth. No irrigation water was applied. 3) Flat method: Procedure of planting was similar to the other two methods but no ridging or mulching was done. Irrigation was also omitted. Only weeding was given according to necessity. Three depths of planting were compared. These were 1 inch, 2 inch and 3 inch. Cultivators in this country usually do not plant seed-tubers deeper than 3?. The methods of culture and the depths of planting in all combinations made up nine treatments. The experiment was laid out in the randomized block design with four replications for each treatment. Within each block the treatments were randomly assigned to individual plots measuring 256 sq. ft. each. The crop received the usual care. No chemical fertilizer was applied in order to avoid possible interaction with the irrigation water which was given to the ridge method only. However, green manuring with Sesbania aculeate was done in the experimental plot during the summer season. The seed-tubers were planted at a spacing of 2´ from row to row and 8´ from hill to hill. Planting was done on the 17th of November, 1972. In the plots assigned to the ridge method, earthing up was done in two stages, first on the 12th December and again 15 days later. Irrigation in these plots was done on the 4th and 20th of January. In the mulch method, the soil surface was completely covered with dried water hyacinth after all the plants emerged from the soil and the plots were left undisturbed until the time of harvest, Plots under the flat method received weeding twice. The crop was harvested on the 26th February, 101 days after planting. The relative efficiency of the methods of culture and depths of planting was evaluated by measuring the rate of emergence of the plants, height of the plants, number of underground nodes per hill, number of stolons and tubers per hill and the yield of tubers in each treatment.
