Developing a Software Tool for Designing Flexible Power Transmitting Element - Flat Belt

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this paper, the design of flat belt has been described and necessary computer program have been developed. The method of determining basic design parameters for fiat belt design are belt thickness, width. pulley diameter. initial tension, stress, ratio of tight and slacks side forces. coefficient of friction has been presented by a flow chart and a software tool has been developed by using Visual Basic language. The main objective or developing this software tool is that computer generated outputs have better accuracy than conventional calculation procedure.

Objectives:

To develop a software tool for design and selection of flat belt drives, suitable to specific requirements.

Methodology:

The most generally used material for belting is Oak-tanned leather, the best grade being taken from that part of the hide lying within 457 mm of the backbone of the animal. When a heavier belt is desired then can be obtained front a single thickness of the hide, two or even three thicknesses are placed one on top of the other and cemented together. These built-up belts are known as double-ply and triple-ply belts respectively. Flat belts are usually employed as an economical substitute for some other means of power transmission, When a flat belt fails, it may break or tear or the joint may fail. This places the driven machine out of production, and the down time may be more expensive than the belt. For this reason, unless the machine is used only occasionally, it is considered good practice to design concretive. Belt probably often fails by fatigue. The fatigue failure of flexible material should not, however, be compared with that of metals. A belt will eventually fail in fatigue when a combination of following causes is present.

i. A high belt tension caused by overloads or improper pulley center selection

ii. Excessive slippage

iii. An accumulation of the weaking effects of momentary overloads due to vibration, shocks, and belt slapping.

iv. Adverse environment condition

Belt speed, initial belt tension, and mathematical modeling was done.

After all these discussions it has been seen that the software tool for the design of flexible power transmitting element-Flat belt is effective and efficient as a new concept, which is very easy to visualize and much more convenient for power transmission. There are a number of operating variables that affect the efficiency of this drives and their efficiency will also vary because of large differences in the amount of power transmitted, Developing software tool for the design of flat belt requires some "Experience factors" which assist to minimize the variation of efficiency.
