A field experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during aman season (July-December, 2011) to assess the yield performance of T. Aman rice variety Binadhan-7 under two conditions of rainfed and supplementary irrigation. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 (three) replications. Recommended dose of all fertilizers were applied to the each unit plot having 4.0 m x 2.5 m. No irrigation (rainfed) was applied to the plots of T1 throughout the whole growing period and the plots of T2 got 4 irrigation, T3 got 3 irrigation, T4 got 2 irrigation and T5 got only one irrigation. Yield and yield contributing components of T. Aman rice variety Binadhan-7 were greatly influenced by supplementary irrigation. The highest number of effective tillers/hill (15.40) was found in T2 and the lowest number (10.80) in T1. Similarly, plant height, panicle length and number of filled grains/panicle were found highest in T2 treatment and lowest in T1. In respect of grain yield and straw yield, supplementary irrigation applied 4 times (T2) showed the best result over rainfed T1 treatment. Thus, it is clear that, 4 times supplementary irrigation may be recommended for more growth and grain yield of T. Aman rice (cv. Binadhan-7) cultivation.

To assess the yield performance of T. Aman rice variety Binadhan-7 under two conditions of rainfed and supplementary irrigation.

The experiment was conducted at Department of Soil science field Lab. Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh having Silt loam texture, located at 24'75' N latitude and 90'50' E longitude at a height of 18 m above the mean sea level under the AEZ Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (UNDP-FAO, 1988). The soil pH was 6.57 containing organic matter 1.29%, total N 0.11%, available P 11 ppm, exchangeable K 0.14 meq/100g soil and available S 10.41 ppm. Test crop and growing season: Binadhan-7, a high yielding T. Aman rice variety was the test crop in this experiment. The experiment was conducted during aman season, July to December, 2011 to assess the yield performance of T. Aman rice variety Binadhan-7 under two conditions of rainfed and supplementary irrigation. Date of transplanting of seedling in the field was 17 August, 2011. Land preparation and transplanting of seedlings: The main land was prepared by adequate puddling of the field and about month old rice seedling was transplanted into the main field having recommended spacing between the rows and seedlings (20 cm x 20 cm).  Method of fertilizer application: TSP, MoP, Gypsum & ZnSO4 all these fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Nitrogen (Urea) was applied in three equal splits/installments. The first 1/3rd was applied at 20 DAT as top dressing, the second 1/3rd was applied during early tillering stage (30-35 DAT) and last 1/3rd at panicle initiation stage (50-55 DAT) as top dressing. Treatments: There were five treatments in the experiment as follows:T1 = no application of irrigation water (rainfed), T2 = irrigation water was applied for four times (10th, 20th, 30th October and 10th November), T3 = irrigation water was applied for three times (15th, 30th October and 15th November), T4 = irrigation water was applied for two times (20th October and 10th November)T5 = irrigation water applied for only once (30th October).Design: The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 (three) replications. Intercultural Operations: The essential intercultural operations like gap filling, weeding, control of insects and pest etc. were done very carefully as and when necessary. Only the irrigation technique was customized to assess the requirement of supplementary irrigation in T. Aman rice cultivation. Harvesting and data collection: The crop was harvested on 15th November, 2011. The harvested crop of each plot was bundled and tagged separately and brought to the clean threshing floor. The different parameters of vegetative growth and yield parameters were recorded. Statistical analysis: Collected data were compiled and analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique for randomized complete block design (RCBD) with the help of a computer package SPSS and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Supplementary irrigation in T. Aman rice is not so familiar practice, but the present study will reveal that 3-4 times irrigation over rainfed will achieve more yield and yield attributes. Thus three times irrigation will act favourable over four times irrigation to sustain this technology in respect of cost benefit analysis in T. Aman rice cultivation.
