This study was carried out in rabi 2003-04 to find out adaptive barley genotypes under different environment. For this purpose, the locations Joydebpur and Jessore were selected as ideal growing condition where as Kalapara of Patuakhali and Paikgacha of Khulna were selected as saline environment. The trial was consisting six genotypes including two check varieties, which were conducted at farmers field in all locations.  Among the genotypes BL–1 (Hulled type) produced the highest yield (3.63 t/ha) followed by BHL-02 (2.75 t/ha) at Joydebpur. K-163 was the highest yielder (2.75 t/ha) at Jessore. Under observation of combine effect of both this locations BHL–02 was the highest yielder (2.69 t/ha). Under saline condition at Kalapara, Patukhali it was found that among the hull-less type BHL– 02 produced 1.25 t/ha grain yield, which was identical with BARI Barley 3. At Paikgacha, Khulna BHL-02 produced highest yield (2.12 t/ha). Under the combine effect at both saline areas BHL – 02 was highest yielder for grain yield (1.69 t/ha).

The experiment was undertaken to evaluate the performance and to select early maturing genotype with high yield potential and other desirable agronomic traits.

This experiment was conducted with six entries including three check variety at four locations i.e. Joydebpur and Jessore, under ideal growing condition and Khulna and Patukhali under saline condition during 2003-04 following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications.  The unit plot size was 5m x 3m maintaining a spacing of 25cm between rows. N, P205, K20, fertilizers were applied at the rate of 100:60:40 kg/ha respectively. Half of N and the whole amount of other fertilizers were applied as basal dose and rest of the urea was applied in two installments; first and second installments were applied after 1st and 2nd irrigation respectively. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.The soil salinity level at Khulna during 26 November, 11 and 26 December 2003, 10 and 25 January 2004, 10 and 26 February 2004, 10 and 25 March 2004 were 2.14, 1.04, 1.80, 3.96, 5.16, 6.82, 4.90, 6.14 and 3.35 mm hos/cm, respectively. Whereas salinity level at Patuakhali were 2.65, 3.24, 3.68, 5.06, 5.87, 7.56, 8.22, 8.76 and 9.55 mm hos/cm on 1 & 30 December 2003, 15 & 30 January, 15 February, 1, 16 & 30 March 2004, respectively. Data on days to 50% heading and maturity, plant height (cm), number of fertile tillers per plant, spike length (cm), 1000 grain weight and yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistical analysis were done by following DMRT.

From the study, it was observed that among the genotypes BL–1 (Hulled type) was the earliest entry in terms of days to heading and maturity (54 days and 95 days, respectively) followed by K-163 (61 days and 98 days respectively) and BL–1 produced the highest yield (3.63 t/ha) followed by BHL-03 (2.75 t/ha) and K-163 (2.52 t/ha) at Joydebpur. BHL-01 was the earliest entry for days to heading and maturity (69 days and 106 days respectively) and K-163 was the highest yielder (2.75 t/ha) followed by BHL-03 (2.70 t/ha) and BHL-02 (2.63 t/ha) at Jessore. BHL–2 was the earliest entry (63 days) and highest yielder (2.69 t/ha) at both locations.Under saline condition at Kalapara, Patukhali K-163 was the earliest entry and BARI Barley 4 was found as the highest yielder but it was the hulled type barley. Among the hull-less type BHL–02 was produced 1.25 t/ha grain yield which was identical with BARI Barley 3 and BHL-02 might be considered as promising line for its highest yield (2.12 t/ha) at Paikgacha, Khulna. BHL–02 was also the earliest entry in terms of days to heading (76 days) and highest yielder for grain yield (1.69 t/ha) as the combine effect of both the saline area.
