Genetic Variability, Correlation and Path Analysis in Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea Linn.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis were studied for seven yield and yield components in twenty three diverge genotypes of groundnut. Considerable genotypic coefficient of variations were obtained for nut yield per plant, nuts per plant, primary branches per plant. plant height and 100 kernel weight. Heritability values were remarkably high for all the traits studied. Except days to maturity and shelling percentage the other characters had moderate to high genetic advance. At the genotypic level nut yield per plant was significantly and positively correlated with days to maturity, nuts per plant, plant height and primary branches per plant but was negatively associated with shelling percentage and 100 kernel weight. Path analysis revealed that days to maturity, primary branches per plant and nuts per plant had substantial direct effects on nut yield per plant.

Objectives:

To find out the genetic variability, interrelationships among different characters and the direct and indirect contribution of characters towards yield of ground nut.

Methodology:

Twenty three genotypes of ground- nut including 6 virginia, 7 valencia and 10 spanish types were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications during the rabi season of 1988-89 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong. The unit plot size was 4 X 3m. The inter and intra row spacing maintained 40 cm and 15 cm respectively. Normal cultural practices were followed to raise the crop, Data were collected from ten randomly selected plants from each plot for pi ant height (cm), primary branches per plant, pods per plant, 100-seed weight (g), shelling percentage and pod yield per plant (g) and the ave- rages were used for analysis. Data on days to maturity was taken on plot basis. Shelling percentage was calculated as the ratio of shelled to the unshelled nuts expressed in percentage. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variations (GCV and PCV respectively) were estimated using the formula of Burton. Broad sense heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean were estimated following the formula suggested by Johnson et alY and Lush respectively. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were estimated according to the standerd formula.

Achievement/Findings:

Results from the present findings, indicated that days to maturity, primary branches per plant and nuts per plant had high heritability associated with high genetic advance, These characters had also significant and positive correlations and high positive direct effect on pod yield per plant. There- fore, emphasis should be given on these traits when one goes for the improvement of nut yield in groundnut.
