Seed Yield of Nerica Rice Cultivars as Affected by Plant Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from April to September 2012 with a view to find out the effect of cultivar and spacing on the seed yield of Nerica rice. Four cultivars viz. Nerica-1, Nerica-4, Nerica-10 and Pariza, and three spacings viz. 20 cm × 15 cm, 20 cm × 10 cm and 20 cm × 5 cm were used as experimental treatments with three replications in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Cultivar, spacing and their interaction significantly influenced most of the yield components and seed yield of Nerica rice. The highest total tillers hill-1, effective tillers hill-1, seed yield, biological yield and harvest index were obtained from Nerica-1. The spacing 20 cm × 15 cm produced the highest total tillers hill-1, effective tillers hill-1, seed yield, straw yield and biological yield. The highest total tillers hil^l-1, effective tillers hill^-1, seed yield and biological yield were obtained from Nerica-1 under spacing 20 cm × 15 cm. Results revealed that the cultivar Nerica^-1under spacing 20 cm × 15 cm could be used to obtain maximum seed yield of Nerica rice.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of cultivar and spacing on the seed yield of Nerica rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh from April to September 2012. The experimental field was located at 24^o 25 N? latitude and 90^o 50? E longitude at an elevation of 18 m above the sea level. The land of the experimental area was medium high with moderate drained condition. The soil was silty loam in texture having a pH value of 6.43, moderate in organic matter content (UNDP and FAO, 1988).The experimental treatment consisted of two factors (A) cultivars, viz. (i) Nerica-1 (V₁), (ii) Nerica-4 (V₂), (iii) Nerica-10 (V₃) and (iv) Pariza (V₄), (B) plant spacing, viz. (i) 20 cm × 15 cm (S₁), (ii) 20 cm × 10 cm (S₂) and (iii) 20 cm × 5 cm (S₃). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatment combinations were assigned to block at random. The unit plot size was 4.0 m × 2.5 m. The land was prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing with a country plough and subsequently leveled by laddering. All weeds and stubbles were removed. The experimental plots were fertilized with urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate @ 180, 125, 70, 60, and 10 kg ha^-1, respectively. Sprouted seeds were sown in line maintaining spacing as per the specification of the treatments. Different intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.

The crop of each plot was harvested at maturity. Data on different agronomic characters were recorded from the five randomly selected hills in each plot and those on seed and straw yields were recorded from central 1 m² area of each plot. The data were compiled and tabulated in proper form and subjected to statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done with the help of computer package MSTAT-C program. The significant differences between individual means were performed using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From the study, it is observed that yield attributes and seed yield of Nerica rice varied significantly due to variation in cultivar under different plant spacing. It is revealed from the results that Nerica-1 performed better at spacing 20 cm × 15 cm. In conclusion, it can be said that the cultivar Nerica-1 at spacing 20 cm × 15 cm could be used to attain higher yield.
