Seed Morphology, Germination and Seed Survival of Albizia Trees in the Nursery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Morphological characteristics of the fruits and seeds, seed germination and the seedling surrvival rate of seven Albizias were studied in the nursery. The fruit size and weight were the highest in A. lebbek and the highest number of seeds per fruits was found in A.falcataria. The rate of untreated seed germination was tried in the seed tray, poly bag and seed bed. The highest germination was found in A. procera (76-85%) in all conditions and in A. falcataria (85%) only in the seed tray. The germination rate of A.lebbek was very poor in all the conditions. The germination period had no effect on the percentage of germination.The germinated seedlings in the seed tray and seed bed showed cent percent survival after 7 days transplanting into the poly bags in the shade and the survivality was 85 to 98% in the open sun after 30 days. No significant difference was observed in survival transplanted from the seed tray and seed bed.

Objectives:

To study the morphological features of the fruits and seeds, seed germination and the seedling survival rate of seven Albizia spcies (Albizia chinensis, A. falcataria, A. Lebbek, A . lucida ,A. procera, A .odoratissima and A. richardiana).

Methodology:

The seeds of A. falcataria, A. lebbek and A. odoratissima were collected from Chittagong and Khagrachari hill district in February. Albizia Chinens and A. procera, from Chittagong in March, and A. lucida and A. richardiana from Chittagong and Dhaka botanical garden in April 1990. The ripe fruits were collected directly from trees and dried for a week in the open sun. The seeds were then separated from the pods by hand and dried again in the sun for another week. Measurements on fruits were taken from unopened fruits and on seeds before putting them into the germination test.The germination trials were made in round plastic seed tray (24.5 cm dia.), transparent poly bag (10 cm x 15 cm) and in open nursery seed bed on pucca floor of a nursery. In all the cases, soil was mixed with cow- dung in 3:1 ratio by volume.In all the three conditions (seed tray, poly bag and seed bed), 100 seeds were directly sown without any pretreatment having three replications.The number of seeds germinated was recorded everyday in each condition by counting the number of seedlings germinated.The germinated seedlings from the seed trays and seed bed were transplanted into the transparent poly bags (10 cm x 15 cm) at the age of two weeks, to determine the survival percentage of the transparent seedlings in shade vs. open sun.The air temperatures and relative humidity were recorded and these were from 28 to 35º C and 52 to 69% respectively during the experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

The fruits of the species were flat dehiscent legumes.The size and colour of the pods were diagnostically different from each of the species.The pod size and weight were the highest in A. lebbek than those of others.T The seeds were deep brown in A .chinensis, A falcataria,; light brown in A. lebbeck; reddish brown in A.lucida, A.odoratissima; dark reddish brown in A. procera and light brownish grey colour in A. richardiana. The seeds of A.chinensis and A.falcataria were lighter in weight and also smaller than others .Germination started within 3-5 days in the seed tray , 3-10 days in poly bags and 2-8 days in seed bed.The mean germination percentage was significantly higher in seed tray.All the species showed cent percent survivality under shade condition. The findings suggested that A. lebbeck seeds do not germinate well without pretreatment of seeds. Among the conditions, success of germination was better in the seed tray and poly bag than the nursery seed bed.However ,when the seeds are very small, the use of seed tray may be a better option. Direct sowing seeds into the poly bags may be done by sowing more than one seed per poly bag. The use of polybag has some advantages.
