Comparative Effect of Seed Treatment with Garlic Extract, Allamanda Leaf Extract, Hot Water and Provax-200 on Seed Borne Fungi of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Garlic (Allium sativum) clove extract @ 1:0 dilution in water, allamanda (Allamanda cathartica) leaf extract @ 1:1 dilution in water, hot water @ 52ºC for 15 min and Provax-200 @ 0.3% (seed weight) were used to treat farmer’s rice seeds. The rice varieties included in this research were Nepali shorna, Mukta (BR 11) and Chinigura. The germination of untreated seeds ranged 66 - 76%.The treated seeds had 94 - 100% germination. The seed borne fungi were Bipolaris oryzae, Curvularia oryzae, Fusarium oxysporum, F. moniliforme, Nigrospora oryzae, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium sp. The prevalence of Bipolaris oryzae was maximum. All the treatments significantly reduced the seed borne fungi (75.5 to 100%) over the control.

Objectives:

To find out the relative advantage seed treatment with Garlic extract, Allamanda leaf extract, Hot water and Provax-200 in controlling seed borne fungi of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Seed Pathology Centre (SPC) and MS Laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period of August, 2010 to October, 2011. The seed samples of Nepali shorna, Mukta (BR 11) and Chinigura were collected from farmer’s storages. All the seed samples were assayed for the presence of fungal pathogens by the Standard Blotter Method following the rules of International Seed Testing Association. After incubation,

the seeds were examined under the stereo-microscope for the presence of seed-borne fungi. Data were recorded after seven days on Seed germination (%), Seed infection (%), Seed-borne pathogen etc. The fungi were identified following the keys of Neergaard (1979). Garlic and Allamanda were collected from different areas of BAU campus. The plant parts were chopped after cleaning in running tap water. The extracts were prepared by crushing garlic cloves in a blender with distilled water, in 1:0 ratio (eg. 1:0= 100 gm nascent plant material without water), and the plant parts (leaf) in 1:1 ratio (eg. 1:1= 100 gm plant material crushed in 100 ml water). The extracts were filtered through cheese cloth. The seeds were dipped in the garlic cloves extracts and separately. The treated seeds were allowed to be dried up on filter paper for some time. The seeds were treated by hot water at 52ºC for 15 minutes device was used. For the chemical treatment requisite amount of seeds were taken in a plastic container and treated with Provax-200 (@ 0.3% of seed weight). The significance of differences between the treatments mean was evaluated following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) by using Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% & 1% level of probability for interpretation of the result.

Achievement/Findings:

In conclusion it can be added that environment friendly products or materials, especially botanical products, have been getting increasing importance. The results have unveiled some treatments which are eco-friendly and significantly highly effective. Therefore there is plenty of scope to perform research on this issue in near future. Out of the treatments used, Provax was found best, but considering the environmental issue, garlic extract is highly desirable for treating seeds of rice in Bangladesh.
