Seed Quality of Chickpea as Affected by Preserved Seeds Using Different Insecticides

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Laboratory studies were conducted with insecticides to show the preservative effect for maintaining the quality of chickpea during storage. After processing and drying, seeds were preserved with different insecticides storing them in earthen pots for 8 months. Insecticides such as Sevin, Mipsin and Asataf were used at 1 g kg^-1 of chickpea seeds. The chickpea seeds were stored till next planting time and seed quality such as moisture content, germination capacity, dry weight of the seedlings and vigour index was observed. The highest values for germination percent, dry weight and seed vigour except moisture content were significant when the seeds were preserved with Sevin. Sevin gave the highest results followed by Mipsin and Asataf. Among three insecticides, Asataf showed less effect.

Objectives:

To determine the effects of three insecticides viz., Sevin, Mipsin and Asataf on the seed quality of chickpea during storage.

Methodology:

Studies were carried out in the laboratory of Seed Technology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. Seeds of chickpea cultivar BARI Chola-5 were collected from Pulses Research Centre experimental field, BARI, Gazipur during the rabi seasons of 2003-04 kept in earthen pots and stored in normal condition. The test insecticides were Sevin, Mipsin and Asataf. Clean and fresh seeds of chickpea of BARI Chola-5 were taken from the seed lot and sun dried to maintain 9-10% moisture content. There were four different treatments including a control i.e., without any insecticide treatment. Other three different treatments were insecticides with six replications. The seeds were stored in March till next planting time and seed quality was observed during August to September in 2004 and 2005. Average germination and moisture percentage of the seed lot before storage was 90% and average moisture content of the seed before storage were 9% and 9%, respectively. The moisture content and germination of seed samples were determined following rule. For each treatment, 100 seeds were placed in Petri dishes. Six replicates were used. The Petri dishes were kept on a laboratory table at room temperature (25 ± 2⁰C). After ten days, normal, abnormal and diseased seeds were counted. After ten days, ten plants were randomly selected from each replicate of each treatment. The seedlings were weighed (in g) and the mean value was computed. Seed vigour was calculated as percent germination x dry weight of seedling. The data for different parameters were compiled and subjected to statistical analysis following a computer IRRISTAT and MSTAT package programme adjusting the means. The correlation co-efficient were done for different variables wherever needed using Microsoft Excel Programme 1997.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of present investigation indicated that the storability of chickpea can be maintained safely for 7 to 8 months when seeds were dried upto 9% moisture level immediately after harvesting and treating the processed seeds with Sevin. Among the three insecticides sevin performed better for storing of chickpea seeds under normal storage condition.
