Effect of Tillage and Mulching on the Growth and Yield of Ginger in Chittagong Hill Tracts Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was designed to find out a suitable method of cultivation of ginger in the hill slope of Chiuagong Hill Tracts to replace the traditional hazardous method of cultivation. There were four treatments in this study, furrow + no mulch, furrow + mulch, dibbling + no mulch, dibbling+ mulch. Both furrow and dibbling tillage practices with mulch gave significantly more germination and maximum number of tillers over non-mulched treatments. Mulching gave significantly more yield (12.17 t/ha) over non-mulched (3.58 t/ha) treatments, which was about 240% higher over non- mulched treatment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of different tillage practices with or without mulch on the growth and yield of ginger.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari during the period from April 1988 to March 1989 using a local cultivar of ginger. During the growth period of the crop, the average monthly minimum temperature was 21.39 °c and maximum 35.05 °C, relative humidity was 86.12% with a total rainfall of 339.26 cm. The experiment area was a fallow slope (about 20%). Slope of the land was measured by a frammed level instrument. No conventional tillage operation was given; only the grasses were trimmed off before planting. The soil was derived from sandstone and siltstine sedimentary rocks with fairly low water holding capacity, having a p^H value of 4.5 to 5. The experiment included four treatments, such as furrow + no mulch, furrow + mulch, dibbling + no mulch and dibbling + mulch. The treatments were factorial combination of two factors, and the experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications; each replication was accommodated with 25 ginger seeds with a spacing of 60 cm between rows and 45 cm between plants in 6.75 m² plot. In furrow method, seeds were planted in a furrow of about 5 cm depth and 15 cm width covered with soil with no subsequent ridging. In dibbling method, seeds were planted in holes at 5 cm depth without further manipulation of the soil. Each treatment was covered with or without surface mulch consisting of dried sungrass (lmperata cylindrica L.). The first mulching with 20 t/ha and the second and third mulching with 10 t/ha were done immediately 90 and 180 days after planting, respectively. Standard dose of fertilizer and their time of application (as recommended by BAR!) were followed and applied by pegging method. Data on germination were taken fortnightly starting 30 days after sowing, whereas number of tillers was recorded after 75 days until the parameter reached the maximum level. Data on number of fingers, yield per plant were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from each treatment at the time of harvest in March. The yield per hectare was calculated from the total yield per plot. The percent data were transformed (square root) and analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

These results have clearly shown that higher soil moisture due to mulches resulted in early emergence of ginger, increased vegetative growth and extended growing period which ultimately contributed to increase the yield of ginger in mulched treatments. The results also indicated that both the tillage practices were suitable for ginger production in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region provided mulching were practiced
