Different types of bagging, sanitation measures and insecticides were tested to develop effective management package in controlling mango leaf cutting weevil for the protection of the new flashed leaves of mango against the attack. Three types of bags such as mosquito net, perforated polythene bag and perforated brown paper bag caused a physical barrier to mango leaf cutting weevil for cutting tender leaves and were the most effective control measure with 100% protection. The sanitation by removing fallen cut leaves at three days interval from the infested nursery reduced 30 to 32% reduction of leaf infestation which was about one-third at the control by bagging. The laboratory and field evaluation revealed that out of five insecticides 1 mL L-1 of Ripcord and 2 g L-1 Sevin were highly toxic to the larvae of mango leaf cutting weevil with the reduction of 85 to 89% leaf infestation of mango plants in the nursery. The two IPM packages such as Sanitation + Ripcord (1 mL L-1) and Sanitation + Sevin (2 g L-1) were equally effective against mango leaf cutting weevil which provided 90.3 and 81.2% reduction of infestation.

  Management, Mango leaf cutting weevil

1) To apply bagging of new flushed leaves for protection against the attack of leaf cutting weevil and removal of fallen cut leaf residues as sanitation measure of mechanical control option,

2) To evaluate the efficiency of different insecticides against mango leaf cutting weevil in the laboratory and nursery, and

3) To develop the management package with effective control options for mango leaf cutting weevil.

The field experiment was conducted in mango nursery, Fruit Research Station, BARI, Binodpur, Rajshahi, during January- December of 2006 and 2007 to test the efficacy of different types of bagging of the tender leaves of the young mango grafted plant and sanitation from the attack of leaf cutting weevil. The bagging and sanitation were studied in separate nursery through Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. One year old grafted plants of mango variety BARI Aam-3 were used in these studies. Three types of bagging were maintained on the mango plants using three types of bags. These were mosquito net bagging, perforated polythene bagging and perforated brown paper bagging. One untreated control without bagging was included. Five grafted plants were treated as a replicate. In a nursery 15 plants with new flushes of tender leaves were selected and bagged. The three types of bag used for bagging were of the same size measuring 36 cm × 24 cm. The bag was open at one end closed at other end. The bagging was done by inserting the bag into the tender leaves through the open end. The brown paper bags and polythene bags were perforated by paper punching machine for aeration. After 10 days the bagged leaves were counted for recording data of healthy and infested (showing scissor like cut) leaves and per cent infestation was calculated after removing the bags. The sanitation which was the removal of all fallen cut leaves was done separately in the other mango nursery field which was 300 m away from the bagging nursery. One year old 100 grafted plants of BARI Aam-3 variety were selected. All the fallen cut pieces of tender leaves were collected from the whole plot and destroyed round the year at three days intervals. The field trial of five insecticides having two doses each along with a control was conducted against mango leaf cutting weevil, Deporaus marginatus in July, 2006 and 2007. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with 3 replicates on one year old plant of mango variety BARI Aam-3. Five graft plants were taken as a replicate. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. The insecticides Ripcord 10EC, Metasystox R 25EC and Lebaycid 50EC @ 1 and 2 mL L-1, Sevin 85SP @ 2 and 3 g L-1, and Nimbicidine @ 4 and 6 mL L-1 were sprayed. The laboratory trial of five insecticides having two doses each along with a control was conducted against the larvae of mango leaf cutting weevil, Deporaus marginatus in the laboratory in August, 2007 and 2008. The experiment was laid out of RCBD with 3 replicates. Five larvae contained cut leaves treated as a replicate. The freshly egg deposited fallen cut pieces of tender leaves were collected from the field and brought to laboratory and allowed to hatch the egg. About 4 days old of larvae remained in the leaves were used in this experiment. The spraying of Ripcord 10EC, Metasystox R 25EC and Lebaycid 50EC @ 1 and 2 mL L-1, Sevin 85SP @ 2 and 3 g L-1, Nimbicidine @ 4 and 6 mL L-1 were done with an untreated control. In laboratory 30 leaves were selected for each treatment. The experiment was conducted in a nursery of grafted mango plants. The sanitation method included the removal of all fallen cut leaves from the nursery and destroyed. The application of insecticides Ripcord 10EC @ 1 mL L-1 and Sevin 85SP @ 2 g L-1 were done on separate plants along with sanitation technique carried out consecutively. Five plants were considered as replicate. There were three replicates for each treatment. The untreated control was left without any treatment. The data on the healthy and infested leaves as already indicated were taken after 10 days of application of insecticide and sanitation. All data were analyzed statistically after appropriate transformations and the means were separated using DMRT (Duncan’s Multiple Range Test) by MSTAT Computer Software.

Mosquito net, perforated polythene bag and perforated brown paper bag were used in the grafted mango plants covering the new flushed leaves in the nursery replicated for each type of bag so that the mango leaf cutting weevil could not attack the leaves. On the other hand sanitation measure was done by removing all fallen cut leaves and destroying them in order to remove the eggs and larvae remained inside the leaves and also to avoid the appearance of next generation insect. In the light of above discussion, it may be concluded that the non-chemical control measures such as bagging of tender leaves and sanitation showed considerable reduction of leaf infestation against mango leaf cutting weevil. The combination of sanitation with insecticides Ripcord and Sevin had much more control efficiency for mango leaf cutting weevil and might be important IPM packages.
