The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during 2011-12 to observe the feasibility of intercropping of tomato with leafy vegetables in coastal region. Three inter cropping combinations viz. T1: Sale tomato (60 X 40 cm). T2: Tomato (60 X 40 cm) + 2 rows of red amaranth 20 cm apart between the tomato rows and T3: Tomato (60 X 40 cm) + 2 rows spinach 20 cm apart between the rows were investigated. The inter crop red amaranth and spinach affected the growth of tomato adversely resulting poor growth and low yield of tomato. The highest fruit yield (58.30 t/ha) was recorded in sole tomato cropping and the highest tomato equivalent yield (54.74 t/ha) was obtained from T2 when red amaranth was inter cropped with tomato.

To study the performance of inter cropping of tomato with different short duration leafy vegetables.

The experiment was conducted at the MLT site, Dumuria during rabi season 2011-12. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Three inter cropping combinations such as T1: Sole tomato (60 x 40 cm), T2: Tomato (60 x 40 cm) + 2 rows of red amaranth at 20 cm apart between tomato rows and T3: Tomato (60 x 40 cm) + 2 rows spinach 20 cm apart between tomato rows were investigated. The variety of tomato, red amaranth and spinach were BARI tomato 14, BARI lalshak 1 and local respectively. The unit plot size was 3.0 x 2.4 cm. The sole tomato was fertilized with 150-45-100-20 Kg NPKS/ha and inter croped plots were fertilized with 92-20-75 Kg NPK and 10 ton cow dung per hectare. The full dose of P, S, cow dung and one-third ofN and K were applied during final land preparation. The rest of N and K were applied in two equal installments as side dressing at 25 and 40 DAP. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted on 5 November, 20 I I. The land was irrigated three times and the salinity of irrigated water was recorded. No severe pests and disease infestation was observed. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Both red amaranth and spinach was harvested from the second to third week of December 2011 and tomato was harvested from first week of January to second week of March, 2012. Necessary data were collected and analyzed statistically. Means were separated by DMRT.

The yield components of tomato were significantly influenced by inter cropping. The highest plant height (86.60 cm), number of fruits/plant (48.80) and unit fruit weight (52.12g) were obtained from the sale tomato and the lowest values of these parameters were obtained from Tomato + Spinach inter cropping. The growth and development of tomato plant was adversely affected by both of red amaranth and spinach inter cropping at the early stages resulting in lower number of fruits and unit fruit weight. The highest fruit yield of tomato (58.30 t/ha) was recorded from sole cropping. Number of fruits/plant and unit fruit weight of tomato were higher in sale cropping which contributed to higher fruit yield. The lowest fruit yield (47.37 t/ha) was recorded from Tomato + Spinach treatment combination. The highest tomato equivalent yield (54.74 t/ha) was obtained from Tomato + Red amaranth inter crop combination. The soil salinity was recorded as 2.30-8.95 dS/m during the crop growing period. Inter cropping of red amaranth or spinach with tomato was not found economically viable in the coastal saline areas of Khulna. HYV tomato is profitable in sole cropping system than inter cropping with leafy vegetables in the coastal saline areas of Khulna.
