Much variation was observed among the varieties, seed sizes and generations for all the storage parameters studied up to 195 days of storing. Granola had an excellent keeping quality which showed the lowest weight loss followed by Ailsa, Provento. Small sized tubers showed good storage behavior over large and medium tubers. Average weight loss was noticed as 10.86% and 22.50% at 90 and 150 days, respectively which increased up to 36.82% at 195 days in first year. In the second year, the highest weight loss was recorded in Arinda, Asterix and Multa at different observed days. Average weight loss of 7.96% and 16.45% was noticed at 90 and 150 DAS, respectively, which increased up to 22.26% at 195 DAS. In the 3rd year Cardinal showed the highest weight loss till 195 days. Average weight loss of 4.29% and 11.39% was recorded at 90 and 150 days, respectively which increased up to 22.26% at 195 days after storing. Percent weight loss of tubers increased with increasing storage time due to tuber dehydration, evaporation, respiration and sprout growth and ultimately causing deterioration in tuber quality. Granola performed better for long dormancy as it took the longest time to initiate sprouts (102.8 days, 96.7 days and 118.6 days to sprouting in first, second and third year, respectively) compared with the least dormant varieties, viz. Felsina (44.44 days), Arinda (34.44 days) and Raja (57.33 days) in the first, second and third year, respectively. The maximum days to cent percent shrivelling was recorded in Granola (179.8), Ailsa (168.4) and Provento (167.9) which differed significntly with the other varieties. In the first year, rottage loss was the maximum in Raja up to 150 days followed by Felsina up to 105 days. Rottage loss due to both soft rot and dry rot varied from 1.25% to 36.62%.

1)    To identify potato varieties having better keeping quality under natural storage condition at different generations

2)    To select suitable size for longer shelf life under natural condition

3)    To elucidate the tuber physiology under natural storage.

The experiment was conducted at the seed technology laboratory BSMRAU, Gazipur under natural storage condition (netted wooden box). Twelve potato varieties namely Diamant, Cardinal, Granola, Patrones, Provento, Multa, Raja, Asterix, Felsina, Arinda, Ailsa and BARI TPSΙ were used for knowing their storage behavior under natural storage condition for consecutive three years. Tubers obtained from first generation (Progeny of Breeder seed) used in the first year, tubers obtained from second generation used in the second year and tubers from third generation used in the third year. The experiment was conducted for consecutive three years during the period from the March, 2009 to September, 2011. The experiment was conducted using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications having three tuber sizes viz. Large (41-55 mm), Medium (28-40 mm) and Small (<28 mm) were used for this study. Fifteen tubers were taken from each size for each variety. Three grades of tubers (size) each having 15 tubers were taken immediate after harvest during the three years study period. The tubers of each grade of varieties were kept in a netted wooden rack (to avoid Potato Tuber Moth infection) and stored in well ventilated room under diffused light up to 195 days after storage. Weighing of tubers was taken at every 15 days interval up to 195 days. The collected data were transformed by square root transformation and were analyzed with MSTATC. The data were recorded on percent rottage loss by weight (soft rot and dry rot), percent physiological weight loss, days to sprouting and shrinkage. Percent total weight loss was calculated from percent rottage and physiological weight loss. Tubers were checked every day for days to sprouting, 100% sprouting and shriveling. Physical condition of tubers, length of sprouts was recorded after 195 days of storing. Physical condition of tubers was evaluated by eye estimation.

The lowest cumulative weight loss was demonstrated by Granola while the highest by BARI TPS1, Raja, Arinda, Asterix. The rate of weight loss in all varieties was in a uniform trend. The highest weight loss occurred in small sized tubers and the lowest in large tubers. In respect to three years, the highest weight loss and rottage loss was found in the 1st year (G1, progeny of 1st generation) and the lowest in 3rd year (G3,   progeny of 3rd generation). In most of the varieties rottage was very low up to 75 days. Raja, Felsina, Provento, BARI TPS1, Arinda, Cardinal performed very poorly regarding losses due to rotting while Granola, Asterix, Diamant showed better performance at different years. It was also observed that rottage loss was higher in large sized tubers compared to that of other sizes. A close relationship was observed between days to sprout initiation and days to sprouting in all tubers among varieties. The shortest days to sprout initiation were required by Arinda, Felsina, and Asterix in different years. However, Granola performed better and took the longest days to initiate sprouts. The highest days to sprouting in all tubers was recorded in Granola which was followed by Ailsa and Patrones in three years. The maximum days to cent percent shriveling was recorded in Granola and the minimum was in Multa. The large and medium sized tubers took the highest days to cent percent shriveling while small size had the lowest. Regarding sprout length, it was the highest in Arinda with small sized tubers and the lowest was in Multa with large tubers followed by Granola with small tubers. The maximum weight of remaining tuber was recorded in Granola and the minimum was found in Cardinal. The maximum days to sprout initiation for large size tuber obtained from Granola and the minimum from Felsina. The highest days to sprouting in all tubers was required by Granola with small size tubers. The lowest days to sprouting in all tubers was 71.67 and 67.33 in Multa and Asterix with large and medium sized tubers, respectively. The maximum days to hundred percent shriveling was observed in Granola with large tubers.
