Updating of Soil and Land Resource Utilization Guide, Joypurhat Sadar Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil and land resources inventory of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila was updated by conducting semi-detailed soil survey in the year 2009. Joypurhat Sadar Upazila is subdivided into two physiographic units viz. Barind Tract(30%Tista Floodplain (54%). The whole Upazila was divided into 8 mapping units representing unique management units separated on the basis of varying landform, land type and soil type. Land use and management practices were recorded during field survey. Soil fertility were assessed and fertilizer recommendation were made for suitable crops. Crop suitability were assessed on the basis of 9 soil and land characteristics. Use of Upazila nirdeshika at mouza level were explained. Updated Nirdeshika wasprepared by compiling physical and chemical data base.

Methodology:

A photo-interpretative soil and land form map was prepared by analyzing recent photos of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila. Joypurhat Upazila is divided into two physiographic units viz. Barind Tract (AEZ 25 & AEZ 27) and Tista Floodplain (AEZ 3). Both Barind Tract and Tista Floodplain is again sub-divided into 4 mapping units. Semi-detailed soil survey was carried out to validate the mapping units by making traverses at regular interval across the catena. Soils were examined by opening mini pits. Land use and management data were recorded on each checking point by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were collected @ one sample per 200 hectare of area covering each landform, land type and soil groups. Soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory to assess soil fertility in order to make fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops. Map was made final by incorporating changed features as recorded during field survey. Updated soil and land resource utilization guide of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila was prepared by compiling physical and chemical data base of the Upazila.

Achievement/Findings:

Joypurhat Sadar Upazila is situated between 25^o01' & 25^o14' N latitude and 88^o55' & 89^o11' E longitude covering an area of 23,864 hectares. The Upazila consists of 1 Pourashova, 9 Union and 184 Mouza. Per capita land availability is only 0.09 ha. The Upazila is broadly divided into Barind Tract and Tista Floodplain. High land. medium high land and medium low land comprises of 41.5%, 39.6% and 2.6% of the arable lands. Miscellaneous lands occupy about 16.3% of the Upazila. Silt loam is the predominant (61.0%) soil type of the Upazila followed by clay loam (20.6%). Sandy loam soils occupy 1.6% area. In Barind Tract high land soils are Amnura, Ekdala; medium high land soils are Amnura, Ekdala and Charkai while medium low land soil is Kahalu. Amnura soils occupy 24.1% of the Upazila. In Tista Floodplain high land soils are Palasbari, Manda and Gangachara; medium high land soils are Gangachara, Kaunia and medium low land soils are Kaunia, Laskara. Homesteads have aravble high lands which may be utilized for homestead gardening. Water recedes very early and early from 39.6% and 32.5% area of the Upazila indicating that early rabi crops can easily be cultivated in time. Intermittently and poorly drained soils occupy 41.5% and 42.2% of the Upazila. Rabi vegetables, rabi crops can easily be cultivated in ID soils while drainage is necessary if kharif vegetables are cultivated.Annual crops (Sugarcane/Banana); Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables; Rabi crops-Jute/T.Aus-T.Aman; Potato/mustard- Boro (modern)-T.Aman (modern); Boro (modern)-Fallow-T.Aman (modern); Boro-Fallow-Fallow are the major cropping patterns in the Upazila.Soils of the Upazila are gtenerally deficient in N, P, K, Ca and OM. Part of Dogachi, Bhadsha, Mohammadabad, Dhalhar, Puranapoil union may be brought under year round vegetable production and Sugarcane/Banana.
