An experiment with four different degrees of leaf pruning viz. no leaf pruning, 25% leaf pruning, 50% leaf pruning and 75% leaf pruning on the detached water apple (Syzygium samarangense) air-layered shoot was carried out at the Germplasm Center (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh (FTIP-BAU-DH) during April, 2010 to November, 2010. The highest percent (82.14%) survival was obtained with 75% leaf pruning followed by 50%, 25% and no leaf pruning. Growth parameters such as number of shoots and number of leaves per layer were also higher allowing 25% of leaves to remain with i.e. pruning of 75% leaf of each layer. The highest percent of survivability was observed in BAU-Jamrul-1 and also the number of shoots, no. of leaves at different days was maximum in the variety BAU-Jamrul-1.

To investigate the effect of different degrees of shoot pruning of water apple air layers on their survivability and growth performance.

The study was carried out at the BAU-Germplasm Center (BAU-GPC), Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period form April, 2010 to November, 2010. Three varieties of water apple namely BAU-Jamrul-1, BAU-Jamrul-2 and BAU-Jamrul-3 and four different degrees of leaf pruning namely, no leaf pruning, 25% leaf pruning, 50% leaf pruning and 75% leaf pruning were practiced on the detached air-layer. For water apple air-layering healthy, disease free, lateral shoots of approximately l-year old and preferably from past season growth were selected. The approximate diameter of branches was taken as 0.847 cm to 2.54 cm and this was done. In the month of April, 2010 water apple air-layer was done by removal of 3 cm long bark in the form of a ring and then scrapping was done to remove the cambium layer with the help of a sharp knife. The wood was then covered with moistened rooting medium. To cover the mixture completely a 0.65 m2 piece of clear polyethylene sheet was used. The end of the wrapping materials was carefully tied up thoroughly with rope and was left for rooting. The layers were separated from the mother plant when the outer surface of the rooting medium within the polyethylene sheet was full of newly formed roots. After detachment of the layer from the mother plant, leaf pruning was done according to the treatments. Then the layers were planted in polybag and two months, the polybags were transferred in the nursery bed. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Number of shoots and number of leaves per successful layers were recorded at 15 days interval starting from 20 days after planting and were continued up to 185 days. Percentage of success (root initiation) and survivability of layers were recorded at 55 days from the date of operation and at 60 days from the date of planting respectively. The collected data on different parameters were statistically analyzed wherever necessary. The mean of all treatments were calculated and analyzed of variances for all the parameters under ‘F’ variance test using MSTAT program. The significance of difference between pair of means was expressed as least significant difference (LSD) test.
