Updating of Soil and Land Resoorces Utilization Guide, Rajbari Sadar Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil and land resource utilization guide of Rajbari Sadar Upazila was updated by conducting semi-detailed soil survey in the year 2008. Rajbari Upazila is broadly divided into two physiographic units-Old Ganges Floodplain amd Young Ganges Floodplain. The older landscape is again subdivided into 6 mapping units and Young landscape into 2 mapping units on the basis of varying landform, land type and soil types. Land use and management practices were recorded during field survey. Soil fertility were assessed and fertilizer recommendation were made for suitable crops. Crop suitability were assessed on the basis of nine soil and land characteristics. Use of Upazila nirdeshika were at mouza level were explained. Updated soil and land resource utilization guide was prepared by compiling physical and chemical data base.

Methodology:

A photo-interpretative soil and land form map was prepared by analyzing recent aerial photos of Rajbari Upazila. The Upazila lying under Old Ganges Floodplain (AEZ 12) and Young Ganges Floodplain was again sub-divided into six and two mapping units respectively. Mapping units were delineated considering variation of landform, land type and soil type. Semi-detailed soil survey was carried out to validate the mapping units under each physiography. Traverses were made at regular intervals and soils were checked across the catena by opening mini-pits. Land use and management data were collected by interviewing the farmers and field observations. Soil samples were collected @ one sample per 200 hectares of area covering each land form, land type and soil groups. Soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory to assess soil fertility and fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops. Crop suitability were assessed considering nine physical and chemical characteristics of land and soil. Map was finalized by incorporating changed features as recorded during field survey. Updated soil and land resource utilization guide of Rajbari Sadar Upazila was prepared by compiling physical and chemical data base.

Achievement/Findings:

Rajbari Sadar Upazila is situated between 23^o34' & 23^o48' N latitude and 89^o31' & 89^o46' E longitude covering an area of 32,387 hectares. The Upazila comprises of 1 Pouashova, 14 Union and 217 Mouza. Per capita land availability is about 0.11 ha. The Upazila is broadly divided into two physiographic units viz. Old Ganges Floodplain (19,965ha) and Young Ganges Floodplain (3,276 ha). High land, medium high land, medium low land and low land occupy 18.3%, 40.4%, 8.9% and 4.7% of total arable lands. Miscellaneous lands occupy 27.7% of the Upazila. Major area is covered by clay soils (30.9%), followed by loam (24.2%) and clay loam (17.2%) soils. In older landscapes highland soils are Sara, Gopalpur, Ishwardi; medium high land soils are Sara, Gopalpur, Ishwardi and Ghior while medium low land soils are Ghior and Ramdia. In young landscapes medium high land soils are Rayna, Gangse Silty alluvium; medium low land soils are Rayna, Katra and Ganges silty alluvium. Low land soil is Ganges silty alluvium. Homestaed contain arable high land which is 2.2% of the Upazila. There are scope to utilize these lands for homestead gardening.Water recedes very early and early from 55% of the Upazila indicating possibility of cultivating Rabi crops in time. Intermittently drained soils occupy about 18.3% of the Upazila while poorly drained and very poorly drained soils occupy 52.7% and 1.3% of the Upazila respectively. Important cropping patterns are Sugarcane inercropped with lentil/ mustard/linseed; Rabi vegetables-Kharif vegetables; Rabi crops-Jute-T.Aman; Rabi crops-Jute-Fallow; Rabi crops-B.aus-Fallow; Rabi crops-mixed B.Aus & Aman; Boro (modern)-Fallow-T.Aman (modern); mustard-Boro (modern)-T.Aman; Boro (modern)-B.Aman; Boro (modern)-Fallow-Fallow; groundnut-Fallow-Fallow. Soils of the Upazila are deficient in N, P,K, Zn and B. In the south-western part of the Upazila there are some bil and baors which can be utilized for aquaculture. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide. The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
