Data for the study were collected from 100 randomly selected farmers of four villages of Bogra district through interview schedule during November-December 1997. The farmers faced highest problem in pest control aspect followed by the aspects like marketing, fertilizers, irrigation, quality seed and credit. The farmers faced medium overall problems in boro rice cultivation and had negative relationship with family labor, farm size, cosmopoliteness, communication exposure and knowledge of boro rice cultivation. Pest control problem of the farmers was negatively related with education, communication exposure, innovativeness and knowledge of boro rice cultivation while their rice marketing problem was related with their family labor, farm size and communication exposure. Farmers' problem with regard to fertilizers was related with family labor, farm size, cosmopoliteness and communication exposure. Similarly, irrigation problem was related with farm size, cosmopoliteness and knowledge of boro rice cultivation. Seed problem of the farmers was found to have relationship with most of the selected variables like education, family labor, farm size, cosmopoliteness, communication exposure, innovativeness and knowledge of boro rice cultivation while the credit problem showed no relationship with any of the selected characteristics of the farmers.

1. To identify the problem confrontation of the farmers in different aspects of boro rice cultivation like quality seed, fertilizers, pest control, irrigation, credit and marketing.

2. To determine the extent of problem confrontation of the farmers in different aspects of boro rice cultivation like quality seed, fertilizers, pest control, irrigation, credit and marketing.

3. To explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their extent of problems encountered in different aspects of boro rice cultivation.

Four villages namely Shotihara, Tejpara, Mazhpara and Hossainpur were selected randomly out of the 15 villages of Rameshawarpur union under Gabtali thana of Bogra district. Data were collected from 100 randomly selected farmers by using interview schedule during 15 November to 30 December 1997. the interview schedule was pre-tested and necessary modifications were made prior to final data collection. The characteristics of the farmers like education, family labor, farm size, group participation, innovativeness, cosmopoliteness, communication exposure and knowledge of boro rice cultivation were considered as independent variables while extent of problems in using different production resources like use of quality seed,Family labor was operationalized on the basis of the agricultural work performed by all the members of the family. A member who do not work got no score while a member aged below 12 got quarter, aged 12 to below 18 got half and aged 18 and above got a full score for his agricultural work in the family. Farm size was measured in terms of acres and computed. Group participation was measured based on their involvement in different formal groups of the locality. Innovativeness was measured on the basis of years of using 10 selected agricultural technologies. Cosmopoliteness was measured in terms of their extent of travel to outside their social system in a definite period of time. Communication exposure was operationalized on the basis of their extent of contact with different information sources. Knowledge was operationalized in terms of their correct responses against 10 selected statements relating to boro rice cultivation. Problem regarding quality seed was measured on the basis of the farmer's responses to the four selected statements in using quality seed for boro rice cultivation. A four-point scale namely not at all, little, much and very much was designed against each of the statement and a score of 0, 1, 2, and 3 was assigned respectively. The scores for responses against all of the four statements of a respondent were added together to . obtain his problem score in using quality seed. Measurement of problem confrontation of the farmers in other aspects like use of fertilizers, irrigation, pest control measures, getting credit and marketing of boro rice were done following the same procedure. Thus, problem score of a respondent in any of the aspects could range from 0 to 12, 0 indicated no problem and 12 indicated high problem. Descriptive statistics like frequency, mean and co-efficient of variation were estimated and correlation test was done to interpret the data as per objectives of the study.

1. The farmers were found to face first ranking problem in the pest control aspect. Pest infestation is comparatively higher in boro rice due to favorable climate of many pests like rice stern borer, rice ear cutting caterpillar, brown plant hopper which cause substantial damage to boro rice yield. 2. Marketing of boro rice was found as second ranking problem of the farmers. Absence of Government efforts to timely procure boro rice from the farmers level at fair price, presence of middle-men during selling period and often selling of rice to the middle-men without cash payment created tremendous marketing problem to the farmers. 3. Use of fertilizers and irrigation in boro rice cultivation were found as other major problems of the farmers. Availability of fertilizers to the farmers at low cost during the season as well as on-credit, fertilizer distribution policy against their reasonable deposit need to be arranged. 4. Communication exposure of the farmers was found to have significant contribution to overcome their problems in all the aspects selected in this study.
