Soil and land resources inventory of Pangsha Upazila was updated by conducting semi-detailed soil survey in the year 2008. Pangsha Upazila is broadly divided into two physiogrphic units viz. Old Ganges Floodplain (81%) and Young Ganges Floodplain (19%). Older landscapes are sub-divided into 9 mapping units and Younger landscapes are sub-divided into 3 mapping units representing unique management units separated on the basis of varying land form, land type and soil type. Land use and management prcatices were recorded during field survey. Soil fertility were assessed and fertilizer recommendation were made for suitable crops. Crop suitability were assessed on the basis of 9 soil and land characteristics. Use of nirdeshika at mauza level and its use other than crop culture were also explained. Updated Upazila nirdeshika was prepared by compiling physical and chemical data base.

  Land management

1. Update soil and land resource inventory of Pangsha Upazila.

2. Assessment of soil fertility and fertilizer recommendation.

3. Crop suitability assessment.

4. Preparation of updated Upazila soil and land resource utilization guide of Pangsha Upazila.

A photo-interpretative soil and land form map was prepared by analyzing recent aerial photos of Pangsha Upazila. Pangsha Upazila is broadly divided into two physiographic units viz. Old Ganges Floodplain and Young Ganges Floodplain. Old Ganges Floodplain is again sub-divided into 9 mapping units while Young Ganges Floodplain is sub-divided into 3 mapping units. Semi-detailed soil survey was carried out to validate the mapping units by making traverses at regular interval across the catena. Soils were examined by opening mini-pits. Land use and management data were recorded by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were collected @ one sample per 200 hectare of area covering each land form, land type and soil groups. Samples were analyzed in the laboratory to assess soil fertility in order to make fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops. Map was finalized by incorporating changed features as recorded during field survey. Update soil and land resource utilization guide of Pangsha Upazila was prepared by compiling physical and chemical data base of the Upazila.

Pangsha Upazila is situated between 23o41' & 23o55' N latitude and 89o17' & 90o46' E longitude covering an area of 41,947 hectares. The Upazila consists of 1 Purashova, 17 Union and 328 Mouza. Per capita land availability is only 0.12 ha. High land, medium high land, medium low land and low land covers 15.8%, 50.5%, 12.7% and 1.3% of the Upazila. Miscellaneous land types 19.7% of the Upazila. Sandy, loam, clay loam and clay soil covers 0.4%, 27.3%, 18.2% and 34.4% respectively. High land soil groups are Sara, Gopalpur, Pangsha and Ganges silty alluvium. Medium high land soil gruops are Sara, Goplapur, Ishwardi, Ghior, Rayna, Katra and Ganges sandy alluvium. Medium low land soil groups are Ishwardi, Ghior, Ramdia, Katra. Low land soil groups are Ramdia and Baliakandi. Water recedes very early, early normal, late and very late from 15.8%, 43.9%, 11.4%, 7.8% and 1.4% area of the Upazila. Poorly drained soils predominate (63.1%) in the Upazila followed by intermittently drained soils (15.8%) and very poorly drained soils (1.4%). Land use and management prcatices were recorded during field survey. Major cropping patterns recorded in the Upazil are Sugarcane intercropped with lentil, onion and linseed (3.4%); Rabi vegetables-Kahrif vegetables (2.2%); Rabi crops- B.Aus/Jute-T.Aman (13.5%); Rabi crops-B.Aus/Jute-Fallow (18.3%); Rabic crops-mixed B. Aus and B. Aman (5.6%); Boro-T.Aman (23.0%); mustard-Boro (1.6%); Boro-B.Aman (3.7%); Boro-Fallow (5.8%); Groundnut-Fallow (1.5%) and others (1.7%). Soils of the Upazila are in genral deficient in N, P, K, Zn and B. In the southern part of the Upazila big beels and baors which can be brought under aquaculture.
