1. 2. To determine and describe some selected characteristics of Dipshikha beneficiaries.

3. To explore the contributing factors to extent of effectiveness of Group Based Approach, Family Development Approach of Dipshikha towards poverty reduction.

The research work was carried out in Dipshikha working area of TarashUpazila under Sirajganj District and BochaganjUpazila of Dinajpur district. In Tarash, Dipshikha is working in 30 villages under two Union Parishads namely Madhainagar and Deshigram with 1,000 families for more than 3 years (Figure: 3.4 and 3.5) through FDA. In Bochaganj, Dipshikha is working since 1999 in 30 villages under Ishania Union Parishad with 1,255 beneficiaries (Figure: 3.2 and 3.3) through GBA. The distances of Tarash and Bochaganj area from the district head quarters are 40 kilometers and 36 kilometers respectively. These two areas were purposely selected for many reasons such as good communication, cooperation from Dipshikha officials and familiarity with the socioeconomic condition of the areas.

Population and Sampling of the Study

A total 2, 255 beneficiaries of Dipshikha from two different projects as mentioned above were the population of the study. An updated list of the beneficiaries belonged to two study areas was collected from Dipshikha head office. Through a simple random sapling method, a representative sample population was selected at the rate of 7.97% and 10% from Bochaganj and Tarash respectively. Thus a total 200 beneficiaries, 100 from each approach, were finally retained as respondents of the study.

Instruments of Data Collection:

This study was conducted based on both primary and secondary source of data. Data from primary sources were obtained by personal interview using both open and close ended interview schedule. Keeping in mind, the objectives of the study, two separate interview schedules one for GBA and one for FDA were prepared having obtained expert views from the teachers of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (Annex A).

Data Analysis

Cross tabulation and bar chart were used for data presentation. With a view of describing data mean, standard deviation, percentage and frequency were applied to delve into various dimensions of poverty and Dipshikha interventions and impacts. Paired sample T-test was applied to compare a range of indicators of well being of Dipshikha members between pre and post Dipshikha period for both approaches. An independent sample T-test was employed to compare the effectiveness on selected dimensions between group based approach and family development approach.
