Strength Properties of Champa (michelia Champaca) and Chapalish (artocarpus Chaplasha)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Strength properties of Champa (Michelia champaca) and Chapalish (Artocarpus chaplasha) were studied. From data analysis and found that Champa is a moderately heavy, moderately strong, hard and non-tough timber. On the other hand, Chapalish is a light, weak, moderately hard and moderately tough timber. The two species are, therefore recommended for use in cases requiring of timber light to moderate weight and moderate strengths.

Objectives:

The present report deals with two new species, champa (Michelia champaca) and Chapalish (Artocarpus chaplasha). Champa and chapalish are found in the forest of Chittagong, Chittagong Hill Tracts and Sylhet. The species are used as furniture, boat building, construction and many other purposes. It is hoped that this report would be useful for both timber users and designers.

Methodology:

Collection of materials : Test materials were obtained from the forests of Chittagong Hill Tracts as indicated below :

Champa (Michelia champaca): Three representative trees of 37 to 52 cm diameter were collected from Kaptai Reserved Forest of Chittagong Hill Tracts and three samples per bolt were taken randomly from each of one 2.50 m bolt above the stump height of each tree.Chapalish (Artocarpus chaplasha): Three representative trees of 30 to 37 cm diameter were collected from Rangamati Reserved Forests of Chittagong Hill Tracts and three samples per bolt were taken randomly from each of one 2.50 m bolt above the stump height of each tree.

Marking and sawing of bolts: Top ends of all the bolts were marked into 6.35 cm by 6.35 cm squares with respect to tree, bolt and stick, and sawn into nominal 6.35 cm by 6.35 cm by 2.50 m sticks. Selected sticks were taken in pairs. From each pair, one stick was taken for test in green condition and the other one for test after air drying. The sticks for airdry tests were cross-stacked species-wise and allowed to airdry for a period of three to four months till they reached about 12 per cent moisture content.

Preparation of test specimens: All green and air-dried sticks were machined to 5.08 cm by 5.08 cm by 2.50 m strips. Clear specimens were obtained from these strips according to sizes specified in the ASTM Standards. The cross-sectional dimensions and length of each specimen were measured to the nearest 0.0254 cm.

Testing procedures: All the specimens were tested in accordance with the specifications of the American Society for Testing Materials. Except toughness, all other mechanical tests were performed with a Riehle 9090 kg capacity screw power type universal testing machine. Toughness tests machine designed by the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin.

Achievement/Findings:

Within the range of data and facilities available, the following conclusions may be arrived at :Champa is a moderately heavy, moderately strong, hard and non-tough timber.

Chapalish is a light, weak, moderately hard and moderately tough timber.The two species are, therefore recommended for use in cases requiring of timber light to moderate weight and moderate strengths.Champa is a straight grained, eve and medium textured wood. It is somewhat lustrous with smooth feel without any characteristic odour or taste. Its white sapwood was 2.0 cm to 5.5 cm thick and heartwood was light yellowish brown to olive brown.Chapalish is shallowly interlocked grained in narrow bands. It is coarse and quite even textured wood. It is somewhat lustrous with fairly smooth feel without any characteristic odour or taste. Its sapwood was from 2.5 cm to 5.0 cm thick with white or pale yellowish white colour. Its heartwood was yellowish brown to golden brown but became brown or dark brown after a few hours’ exposure.
